PNP, yeah it’s 4mm brick inside the arch. I hadn’t noticed how much smaller it looked until you pointed it out so perhaps it’s just a trick of the camera.

Ex-pat, the card is stuck with standard PVA. Another coating is applied over the surfaces that will have plasticard attached to it to help with the bonding process. Those sheets are then affixed using good old Revell Contacta.

I finished off this bridge build tonight with the final stages of painting. I’ve followed my usual technique to create the effect, first off, a coat of Revells earth brown was applied to the dressed stone and left overnight to dry. This was followed by a coat of tank grey and rubbed off in places to reveal the colours beneath. Once touch dry, a coat of grey acrylic was applied and vigorously rubbed off - this results in revealing further tones in the colours beneath as well as highlighting the pointing. A final touch of white acrylic dry brushed to highlight the odd limestone bleed.

Ex-pat, pterodactyls are still a common site about Galgorm Hall, about the only thing large enough to produce droppings like that.

LMB, that is praise indeed. If I can achieve a small fraction of what Grotland did I’d be truly happy. It only reminds me that the photobucket purge left us all bereft of an outstanding layout.

A month has passed since my last post and little has happened. This fact is partly due the glorious weather making the loft way to hot to work in and secondly spending too much time building the next bridge on the branchline side of the layout. Using the same methods as before the abutments were toned the same as the portal and a girder bridge scratchbuilt using plasticard, painted and lightly weathered with acrylics.

I decided to add the centre girder for a little variation but am not entirely sure it would be needed. An engineer could tell me if I’ve over engineered this. ><

The building of this bridge does allow me to continue scenics in the corner so time to get out some plaster bandage and get down and dirty.

It looks pretty good to me! As the bridge girders are are quite low profile (not as strong/rigid) as higher side walls, it makes sense to add the third plate girder.

Lovely bridge there Paul - so many people build bridges that are just not right but you have made a great job of that. The central girder is totally prototypical, some are a little lower than the side girders but not always. Just one finishing touch would make it perfect, if you look at prototype bridges there will be strengthening strips (or doubler plates) welded or riveted to the tops of the upper web, you cam make these out of strips of plasticard quite easily.

That's a lovely looking bridge, great overall effect with the stonework.


I think that drawing is for a modern design of a girder bridge, for which the depth of the girder would not extend far above the height of the rail. As such, lighter sections would be used thus necessitating the doubler plates as you approach mid span. Older bridges would be belt and braces as the dynamic techniques to design them just western available, so they would be hugely over engineered, which is a good thing as they would/do suffer from massively accelerated rates of corrosion which is mitigated by the increased sections.
