Second Board...

Postby whynot » Mon Nov 19, 2012 11:41 am

Like with many things in life (well, for me anyway!), actually STARTING is the difficult bit! So, to provide a little motivation here is day one of my attempt to build a second, if very similar, 5' x 18" small "station" that might some time link with the other. Less dense track and the idea is to have a more "rural", spacious, feeling.

It's in what passes for a conservatory, so progress will depend in part on the weather!

Some progress - temperature-wise it's pretty much like working outdoors, so a bit at atime 'til the fingers go numb!

Back in the warm, I've started some new buildings - a Wills Craftsman goods shed and a Ratio timber merchants. While essentially "small" proto structures, quite "large" compared with what I have on the other minimal board, so I shall have to try not to overcrowd the whole scene!

I've decided that it will "feature" green diesels rather than the c.1948/pre-nationalisation steam of board one.

Hi,

Thanks for leaving a link on my thread - I'm always interested in smaller scale layouts like this.

The track plan looks good - should provide plenty of operational interest. I also like the entrance - should look good when a train emerges!

I will watch with interest.

Cheers,
James

Thank you, James. I do find a run-round-loop, however small, an essential - though I suppose a through station with a fiddle yard at each end could allow one to be omitted.

Apart from connecting last 3 feeds and isolating switches I doubt that there will be much progress this side of next year!

I assume you've viewed my other effort?

Hi,

Yes I have looked at your other layout too - although I haven't commented officially yet! I would put links to them into your 'auto-signiture' so that people can find their way from your posts.

It also looks like you've fitted a lot of operational interest into a relatively small space. I like the idea of modelling the two ends of your railway world and deciding what to do to link them later - I might nick that idea for my new project and model somewhere down the line from my layout.

Cheers,
James

Manna, you ain't seen our garden - come to think of it, I haven't SEEN much of it in years! More of a wild life sanctuary.

Just about warm enough to finish the wiring this a.m. so that's done....

Thanks for the interest.

A lull in pressing domestic dramas twixt Xmas and New Year, so a platform. Clearly the "original" has at some time been lengthened and raised, hence varied materials (equally clearly I was using up left over Slaters embossed!).

Yet to be painted, but I'm not sure whether or not will be a passenger facility or disused/goods only. Also filled in some missing sleepers in track joins.

Kick started myself into some 2013 activity!

Looking good, I think if you weathered the stone more it would look like they had raised and lengthened the platform during BR days to fit modern rolling stock?

Keep it up, Harry

Yes, Harry, you're right - should be almost "black" really, I suppose.

Much thinking (it hurts!) over recent weeks. Finally decided.....I (with the help of a builder mate who lives down the street) shall "repair" the conservatory (IF we can cut out and replace rotten wood without large glass panes shattering!), finish board 2 as below and move board 1 out to join it via an 18" bridging board. This was always my original plan and I haven't thought of anything better!

This will free up space indoors for a 48"x12" (plus 30" traverser) H0 USA switching board come Autumn!

Board 2 will in theory look like this:

The track is laid and wired and most of the buildings etc are made.

Or did you crack that one ?

Fair point! Board 2 has been out there in various stages of "development" for some months and remained invasion free. Has a tight fitting lid and the only track "in" has an end plate with a cut out that just clears the rails, so it's as safe as I can make it.

Hi whynot
The makings of another minimalist master piece I see.
What is the green and yellow diesel loco?? that shows up in the pictures.

Thank you, John - but "master piece" is a kindly exageration!

The loco is an H0 Ibertren that I bought as the basis for an 0:16.5 conversion that didn't happen! Actually sold on th' 'bay last week to a chap who had apparently been "looking for one years" for his German industrial layout. They are it seems quite rare.
