Hi Dave,

No probs i'll pack my bags now! :)

Yes the track & most of the scenery will be raised up, although you make a very good point regarding the motor points, and how I need to try to finalise a track plan as soon as possible to make sure the motors can all be accommodated. The lowest level will just be a few scenic areas so wont need any electrics, but the ones above that will need them.

I want to try to make the layout more of a 1980's urban/industrial N gauge city-scape, with railway features, rather than just a model railway, if that makes sense. I need to get onto MS paint to draw up my plans...

Cheers,

Jimmy

Anyrail is great. I use it as well....can't go wrong...and it's free! (for the first 50 pieces anyway)

Cheers, maybe I'll give that a go! If its free for the first 50 pieces I could just do it in blocks and cut and paste the images together.

Finally finished off the baseboard structure, was frustrating at times as the walls aren't straight and bow out in places which meant I had to recut some pieces already after they were glued and screwed together which was a bit of a pain:

But I got there in the end. The final measurements for the layout are 8ft x 10ft x 13.5ft and a width of 2.6ft all the way around.

That's a fair bit of area Jimmy and some serious carpentry! Looking forward to watching this build.

Cheers Graham,

Unfortunately now I have to concentrate on the DIY inside the house before the family arrives for Christmas. But after the new year its full steam ahead with starting proper on the layout :)

Re: New N Gauge Layout - Provisional Trackplan

Postby Jimmy77 » Wed Dec 12, 2012 1:26 pm

I know I know! I really must get my priorities right! :)

Well to make up for the lack of progress I've drawn up the provisional trackplan, its not entirely accurate as its only to give an idea of what it will look like. I've decided to extend the shorter arm so its the same length as the other, i.e. they will both be 13.5ft.

On the diagram the top arm will have a terminus station with parcels depot or similar to the side. The station approach will be over 4 track bridge. On the lower arm there will be another terminus station with 2 through lines to make up a loop. The layout looks a bit of a mess, but some of the track will be hidden, some raised, so it should flow quite nicely I hope in reality. Basically there will be a twin track continuous loop with various branch offs to the different scenic areas. The terminus station and approaches will all be raised up above the rest of the layout.

Be careful with the reverse loop up to the terminus and make sure you have enough crossovers there to run trains to where you want them to be.

Yeah I know I need another set of points in the approach...somewhere!

With regards to the reverse loop are you referring to where the two spurs of the continuous loop meet up over the bridge?

Cheers,

Jimmy

Yeah, you will have opposite polarities there.
