Shawbury Foregate (BR 1987-92ish inspired by Shrewsbury)

Postby 1977joey » Fri Sep 07, 2012 8:43 pm

Hi Guys,

Well for those of you that remember 'Shawbury' my last layout, this is the start of its replacement, 'Shawbury Foregate'.

The layout is based on the operations at Shrewsbury between 1987 to about 1992 ish (To allow me to get a class 158 if we ever get a retooled version). I dismantled the last layout as I wasn't happy with the fact it was a terminus, & also my fiddle yard was less than user friendly being located under a fixed upper level of track.
this time i've gone for a much simpler, but still fun design. The track work is simply flat, 2 continueous ovals, goods loops in the station, & a 7 road fiddle yard at the rear. The board measures 6' x 2' 2", just enough to squeeze in a decent station.

The station itsel will have just 4 Platforms, 2 are through platforms & the other 2 being bays. Passenger trains will be Birmingham to Shawbury Foregate terminating local's normally formed of DMU's, other's continuing on to Chester or Aberystwyth, the latter normally worked by Class 150 Sprinters. The CrossCountry North & west services from Manchester/Liverpool to Cardiff & south wales, formed of loco hauled stock supplimented by Class 156 SuperSprinter's. There's also a local service to Crewe and of course the heart of wales service to Swansea via Llandovery. I will also be including InterCity services to London Euston, with a bit of modellers licence, some of these will be a HST
On the freight side there's the steel coyle Llanwern/Margam to Dee Marsh trains, & also the weekly petroleum train from Stanlow to Aberystwyth. I'm looking forward to my grey Class 56 when it becomes available & although dated, i'm thinking of getting the Farish Class 25 for the Aberystwyth Oil train.

These are the first shots of the layout giving the general idea & how far I have got. A track plan will be following shortly too :)

Glad to see you back on track :D Mark. The layout design looks good, lots of storage and will give the locos a good run I am sure.

Looking forward to seeing the progress on this.

Scott

Hi Mark,

good to see you back.
That looks like a promising start. Nice feeling of space in the station area. This will look great once equipped with your trademark platforms :D .
I hope we don't have to wait as long for your next update as for this one  .

All the best,
Michael

Hi Chaps,

Well thankyou for the great comments so far :D
i've finally drew up a track plan now its all in place. Here it is....

I intend to build a raft out of polystyrene over the storage sidings at the one end of the layout which will be removable so the townscape buildings (which i've saved off the old layout) will now be on an upper level.
More pictures will be posted once the platforms have been constructed :) .

All the best,
Mark

Hi Chaps,

Well not much on the station construction front to report, though when I did construct the top end of the Platform, I realised that an extra 6" to the baseboard would make a world of difference to the overall look. What made me think this was my HST just didn't look right when on platform 1, with one of the power cars round the bend. Now i've added the extra 6", the HST with 6 X Mark 3 coaches & 2 power cars fits nice & flush in the platform with room either end :P . Doing this I have added another carriage siding so now I have 2 carriage sidings that can hold up to 7 x coaches, & 2 short sidings with a dead section to hold upto 2 loco's each or upto a 3 car DMU.
Now all the track is in place, tacked down & tested, proper construction of the station can begin.

Here are the alterations...

Hi Mark,
I totally agree with Scott. :D
The swing of the platform looks great and its width will give you lots of space for detailing. Where will you be adding the station building?

Michael

Thanks Michael :)

There will be a buffet, toilets & staff accomodation between Platforms 1 & 4 & depending on room, a red star office. The station building (the one from my old layout) will be used & will be placed on a polystyrene raft I am going to build next to the carriage sidings over the storage yard at the rear. This will be removable too to get at the storage yard. There will be a footbridge to link the platforms with the main station building. There will be some high street buildings also on the raft in front of the station, Hope this helps :)

Mark

Hi Guys,

well, i suppose with the really crap weather & annual leave is giving me chance to get on with the layout rather than being out & about
I have now completed constructing the platforms & they are now in place ready to be edged. I now need to order some clear styrene sheets to start work on the canopies & constructing the buildings at the top end of the platforms.
Here's some pictures of how it all looks as of today, I've placed a polystyrene square with the station frontage building on it just to show where the raft over the storage sidings will be constructed to represent some townscape....

Overall view showing the platform layout. Platform 1 to the right, a through platform, 2 & 3 in the centre where the DMU's stand which are the bays, & Platform 4 to the left, again a through Platform

Hi hiffano,I have two Dapol class 56's,one in blue and the other in railfreight grey. Both these loco's look fantastic and in spite of what has been written about cab side windows and other details,I really like em.Also,as they are models of the original batch of Romanian built loco's you will be most encouraged to know they run beautifully, unlike the real thing which requored additional remedial work when they were delivered to Doncaster Plant Works.

Thanks Guys :)

Well another rainy day....just for a change :| So i've been doing some building. I've created the 2 structures for the platforms which will become the staff accomodation, buffet, toilets & red star parcels office. Today i've ordered the clear plasticard to construct the platform canopies. I've also added the peco bufferstops to the sidings & bay platforms too today.
One of my next jobs is to sort the rear of the main station frontage building as before it was constructed for a terminus and to also create a footbridge to link it with the platforms.
Here are some pictures of how it all looks so far.....

Nice progress Mark, see you have done a little scenic work by the Church as well. What do you use for your platforms?
