New member layout

Postby keith73 » Wed Mar 28, 2012 9:19 am

Hi all, ive just joined NRM its a great site for loads of railway info. Ive just recently dragged all of my Hornby stuff out of storage since I was a kid - having decided to re build a layout after a 30 odd year absence lol. I was going to create a big static layout in the attic but for now Im just going to build a portable baseboard. Its 7'6" x 4'6" with twin rails two 4' platforms, maintenance depot & sidings & the middle section will be a Skaledale village. Photos just show the rough design so far, lots of details to add to it.
Rolling stock will be Hornby orient express, 2 class 37 diesels, class 58 diesel coal sector, class 08 shunter, class 153 DMU Northern Rail & class 158 DMU First Scotrail.
More photos as build progresses. Any comments most welcome :D

its going to be modern buildings etc as most of the trains i have are new diesels & electrics & eventually will get a virgin voyager to run. Although I do really like the Hornby black 5 loco so will run that too when i eventually get it. Will post complete loco running list soon

Hi Progess going well with board, Ive got the construction finished & roughly painted as per the photos. The grey areas will be track & I'm going to cover it with ballast mats, as I dont want to use proper loose ballast as want to re use all the track when I build attic layout. BTW does any one know of a good way to seal the top of the ballast to stop loose particles coming off & getting everywhere? The far sunken green area will be Winterhope Village eventually & near green area will have hilly terrain & a valley to be modelled where the Kings Arms Hotel will sit. Unsure as to wether put a stream/int the base of the valley.
Hope to get all track layed out tomorrow so i can start fixing ballast mats down.
Will keep updating as I progress

Cheers Keith

Hi lots of progress on my layout. As can be seen from the photos. Have built a banked section which was originally going to be level. I think it adds a bit more interest to the layout rising above the maintenance depot & sidings & over the brick bridge & down into the station. I paticularly like the double arch bridge over the valley. this will eventually have a river running through it & footpath beside it. The station platforms have also been made out of planed wood which will be covered with scalescenes platform print off paper. hope to get remaining track areas ballasted & track laid this week so can finally run trains. More updates to follow. :D

cheers for now Keith

Thanks Scott, yeah like the station area 2. Took a while to cut all the edges etc especially for the single track platform.
