I have finally got back to the project and have started to do the scenics around the bridges before i can lay the track. The first attempt to colour the cliffs didnt go too well, think im on third attempt so far but i am happy with the result so this one may stay. Also need to bring the river up to an acceptable level before i can move on. I thought i would show a picture of how the Von Ryan scene is progressing

Finally the layout is progressing, scenic works have begun on the basic landform for both sides. Polystrene sheets and off cuts have been used, already now to be covered in plaster bandage. As said previously, 1 side is to be Christmassy (?) with all associated themes, while the other side will be the film homarges. Photos below of progress. Comments always welcome

Nice progress Herr German.

The addition of scenic framework & buildings are starting to give it a nice 3D feel to it now. I especially like the rock faces below the girder bridge

Those n gauge soldiers look really good, excellent detailing considering the scale.

Steve

Looking good - I like the idea of Frank Sinatra (a well known Model Railway Enthusiast) being featured on a layout. I'm sure he would appreciate it!!

after having the last 2 weeks off and when not out and about i have made some more progress on the layout. The whole layout was covered in a layer of plaster bandage and where required rock facess have been made from plaster covererd in scrunched up kitchen foil and left to dry. The pictures below show parts both with foil and after.
I have also made a start on the platforms for the stationn area. These are made from plasticard, but to be honest i may not use them as they seem a little to high, so i might use them as a template and build up platforms from atrists mounting board.
Also i have made a mock up of another film homage, any ideas what it is?

Looking good so far Herr German, I always like to see winter layouts done well. I think building lights etc are a must with this sort of layout to capture the feel of cold winter evenings.

I like the idea of cameos based on film scenes. It's the sort of thing that makes an observer relate to the layout in their head, so I wouldn't worry about getting things like Von Ryan's Express exactly right- it's the essence of the thing that makes the impact.

well i have been busy finishing the messy plastering stage and have covered the scenic areas in a coat of thin plaster coloured with a buff colour acrylic paint. One side has now had the first covering of grass applied and i am now in the process of going over the layout from one side to the other highlighting and low lighting areas as the other scenics are applied. The following pictures show the progress so far.

That shark looks totally false, which makes it absolutely prototypical as a scene from Jaws!!! Plenty of opportunities for other little scenes, "The Thing" and some poor victim confronting bears from "The Grey" come to mind for a winter layout!

Great stuff.

So this week i have progressed one side of the layout showing the film homages, to a complete(?) state. These are Harry Potter, Jaws, Jurrasic Park, The Italian Job, The Great Escape and Von Ryan's Express. This included planting 153 trees, at the last count. Now i have the other side of the layout to complete as the Christmas scene, might even have if finished by this Christmas if i'm lucky. Anyway i have included pictures for you to judge.
