Chester Northgate BR N guage 1987-92ish

Postby 1977joey » Mon Dec 19, 2011 7:42 pm

Hi Guys,

Well here goes, the start of my new thread. To those of you familiar with my old one 'Shawbury', the layout is basically the same as before, just the station that will be rebuilt.
Chester Northgate is my representation of a mainline terminus station in Chester. My idea been that all North wales coast express services call at the station & reverse to continue their journey. It is also the terminus of DMU services to & from Manchester via Northwich or Warrington, & also services to & from the midlands via Shrewsbury & Wrexham as well as a shuttle service to & from Crewe & parcels services & the odd freight. Mersey rail local services to Birkenhead do not call into Chester Northgate (as this will make it a little too busy), these instead running into Chester 'General', though in reality, I found out that Chester Northgate was the terminus for wirral line services untill the Beeching axe came down.
Not been totally satisfied with my old plan 'Shawbury', the station area is being rebuilt, thought I have saved some of the features which will be put into place as it developes. The rest of the layout is staying the same, although this is still in need of finishing touches.
This layout is not DCC, just operated by a normal DC controller, thought i'm not rulling out DCC in the future. In the meantime, there will be isolated sections of track in the platforms & sidings to allow more than one loco or multiple unit to use them at any one time. Also as I have a good collection of DMU's, there will be joining & splitting of some services in the station.
The overall length of the layout is 9', the bottom part is 2' at its widest & the station board is just 1' wide. It is housed in a bedroom, so I have room for little else along with a double bed & wardrobe.
The bottom part of the laypout has a continuous loop, storage sidings at the rear, & then the incline upto the station. I kept the loop as this comes in handy to watch trains continuously run....& to run in new loco's.
The station will have 4 Platfoms, each capable of holding 7 coaches & a loco (the longest trains i have), & a couple of carriage sidings next to the station.
Here's some pictures of it so far, the track is just in place in the station, just to give an idea of the plan :) ....

Thankyou Chris :)

I'm hoping to get the track pinned down & probably the platforms constructed by the end of the year as I have a couple of days off over Christmas & next week. Depends how busy (& how hung over I am lol! :P )

Merry Christmas,
Mark

The track is all now tacked down & the templates are ready to start construction of my platforms. Here's a couple of pictures just to show how far things have got...

I like! I understand the feeling about life in general getting in the way, that is what it felt like over Christmas. Very jealous of the HST, wish mine had more coaches!

Cheers

Its nice to see you've started a new thread dedicated to your redevelopement of Shawbury Mark.

Looks like cracker of a new plan for the terminus. The original was great & I'm sure the skills you've developed will take this up another step or two. I look forward to see how this progresses.
Regards,
Steve

Hi Guys,

First of all, thankyou for all the encouraging feedback :P Glad you like it.
Well I've been off work today & its given me chance to get some more work done, I now have the platforms constructed, only the finishing touches to be made to these tomorrow all being well.
The clearence is all good, this was tested with my class 156 & 153 dummy set as the 156 has quiet a bulky underframe. All is well & good thankfully  . The next thing will be to start thinking about Canopies for the platforms, as well as staff accomodation, waiting room, buffet etc, these will be on Platforms 3 & 4.
Here is the latest progress...

Hi Mark,

those (incredibly looooooooooooooooooooooong) platforms look good. Can't wait to see them detailed.
Keep up the great work.

Michael

Very nice Mark, will you be using nails as before for the canopy supports? I thought that was a brilliant idea.

Cheers Michael :P .

The platforms I built long enough to accomodate my HST & loco hauled InterCity Mark 2 set. The HST being the longest with 2 power cars & 6 mark 3's, so this can fit comfortably in the platforms with a bit of room beyond the train. When i built Shawbury, i realised my original platforms were slightly too short, with these trains overhanging, so had to alter them after the station was finished, hence me not making the same mistake with this plan thankfully

Glad you like it :D
All the best,
Mark

Hi Scott,

glad you like it. There is a chance I will construct the new canopies using nails for the posts, though I want the new canopies slightly lower than they were on Shawbury....so we will see

Hi Mat,

Glad you like it :D
I made sure the Platforms were long enough to fit in the HST & my 7 coach Mark 2 InterCity set. That was a mistake I made with the previous station & had to partially reconstruct it to fit these trains in the platforms properly.
The platforms are now glued into place & the next job is to design the new canopies, so watch this space for those appearing.

Ollerton is also coming along a treat, i'm really enjoying your thread :P

All the best :)
