Re: First OO 6X4 layout
That's a good compromise. The only thing missing really is another point between the two outer rails but pointing in the other direction.

Good point & would be good but not sure how i can get one in as i dont want the outer loops any bigger.
Trains on the two outer loops wont be switching tracks much so not really a biggy. If i want to change the tracks, i'll just have to do a shunt.
Unless someone has a solution.

Here is a thought for extra points from 3rd radius to 2nd.

Hi
Latest update. Took on board the suggestion of putting in the additional point. Great idea, makes it loads better so thanks for that.
Started on the tunnel which considering my useless woodworking skills I am quite pleased with the way it's going. Made out of 3mm MDF with the main cuts done for free at B & Q giving me two 10 inch x 6ft bits & a 6ft strip left over which is just the right size for the height of the tunnel. I fixed batons along the backboard bits for the roof of the tunnel to sit on.
Now going to so some paper mache on it & paint with something to get a bit of texture. Any suggestions for this please?
Also started buliding the Metcalfe Country station. Love it, easy to follow and great quality. Recommended

Re: First OO 6X4 layout
Afternoon all.
Week off so a bit of extra time for cracking on with the layout.
Station is just about finished & platforms done, both Metcalfe kits. Just need to add some lights (any recommendations) some buffers, a few people, some steps & i will probably have a go at ballasting round the station area.
Also made a bit more progress on the tunnel today. Bought two plaster rolls, both used up on the bit shown in the following pics. Back to model shop tomorrow.

Good progress, nice job with the station and platforms too. Have you left access to the tunnel incase of derailments?
Would suggest some flat buffers so you don't loose too much platform space.
I have been looking at these lights have no experience of either though and they are quite expensive.

Lights are one of the next things to do on my station so I will watch what you decide with interest.

nice work so far, will keep my eyes on this one
Re: First OO 6X4 layout
Thanks for comments.
Thanks for the links, those lights do look pretty good. I'm back up the model shop tomorrow so will see what i can find. Want it wired up so i can fix the station down.
Still need to cut a hole in the backboard for access, just not sure where yet.

Re: First OO 6X4 layout
Hi there
Welcome to the forum (belatedly
) and good to see a new members first layout. Good to see you've done a few things already: i) you didn't stick with your first plan...and infact seem to have 'graduated' in the respect that you arsed around with it plenty
ii) you asked for advice directly and took it (always a good sign of intelligence that one
) and iii) you've managed to make a set-track layout look like the early stages of a 'proper' railway. Great stuff mate
Cheers fella

Re: First OO 6X4 layout
Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated. Must say, I'm absolutely loving doing this (my wallet isnt), I know why my dad was so into building me a railway now.
Bought some ballast (amongst other things) today so will have a go around the station area tomorrow. Done a bit more work on the tunnel & hill area. My daughter wants to make a model farm so i said she could do it on top of the tunnel area
Couple of Ebay purchases arrived today, some people for the station & a signal box.
Also bought some skalelighting to put in station & signal box but having some issues trying to get it to work.

Crikey, now we find out that the daughter has handed you vital advice that means you have completed a fourth vital lesson, namely the placement of livestock on the layout
Must have cows. Or at least some sheep
Cheers fella, look forward to seeing what you can do with the lights

Re: First OO 6X4 layout
Afternoon, bit more progress. (dont mention Skalelighting though)
Did my first bit of ballasting, found it quite therapeutic. Not doubt the novelty might wear off.
Progress made on the tunnel entrance and the rock faces. Used plaster roll then covered it with some Polycell smooth walls stuff i had left from decorating to get a rugged effect. painted it with various shades from Homebase match pots @ 1.59.
Put down some base colours ready for that sprinkly stuff to cover it. Also saw the arrival of some hand made wooden fencing & trees off Ebay.
So, pic time. Let me know your thoughts, criticism is welcome.
ps, i've included some pics of cows for the cow fans.
cheers
