New Layout Hornby Track Plan MODIFIED With Thomas & Friends

Postby Dwarfboysim » Sun Dec 19, 2010 5:56 am

Hi all,
Well I have started my layout finally back in July and have only just got around to putting up some pictures. Here is the baseboard that I built with my Father in Law in January of this year. It is approximately 6 foot x 10 foot in size.

Below is the plan I chose to use as a base from the 2009 Hornby Track Plan book.

The plan was slightly bigger than the table so I had to use the Hornby Virtual Railway 2 software to scale it down slightly to make it fit. I found the Hornby software to be useful if a tad annoying at times.

The track was purchased over the next 6 months and cost almost $1000. Some hunting on eBay and also online stores around Australia saved me some money though.

Below is all the track on the baseboard with some old models and some of my locomotives to give it a test run.

I have recenlty started on the modelling of the layout. Raising some areas slightly in preperation for a bank to the edge of a river along with the start of a hill and bridge. More photos and updates to come soon.

So far in my collection of locomotives I have 12 of the Thomas and Friends Range along with various Thomas Rolling Stock and the Breakdown Crane. My new Hornby Turntable is currently sitting under the Christmas tree awaiting Christmas day when I can pull it out, convert to DCC and install it. All the locomotives are converted to DCC so far I have:

Thomas, Edwards, Henry, Gordon, James, Percy, Toby, Duck, Devious Diesel, Emily, Bill & Ben.

Looking great mate!

It would be nice to see a thomas themed layout get finalised and it looks like your well on the way!
Love the track plan too. I'll have to keep tabs on this one :)

I have looked a little at the Bachmann Thomas range. My wife also looked at them and both agreed that we prefer the Hornby models. There is just something about them. Will be adding some more pics over the Christmas break as I lay the cork underlay and start to install the point motors etc.

the bachmann ones are better looking compared to the hornby ones. they actually look like the real things.

yeah the bachmann ones are based on the TV models whereas Hornbys models follow Rev. W. Awdrys sense of realism (if thats the right word lol) and are based on real engines.

I prefer the Bachmann models but the Hornby ones have a higher quality feel to them :)

Both my wife and I feel the Hornby ones are of a better quality. Although Bachmann's Thomas range appears to be more extensive than Hornby's. Any one had an experience with the Thomas Rolling Stock from Bachmann?

yeah I currently own from Hornby: Thomas, Toby and Henry and from bachmann I own their Henry (hes a personal favourite) and I much prefer the Bachmann offering

The Bachmann one is loco drive (as are all the bachmann locos) and has moving eyes, I prefer it because I grew up with the TV series rather than the books and so I wanted the model to look like the Henry I remember (which it does as it is based on the TV model). The bachmann ones are cheaper...bachmann Henry i got for £38, Hornby Henry cost me £70. It is a good preformer, maybe not as strong as the hornby one. the only quibbles with the bachmann offering are that the models have a shiny finish and look a little plasticky and the face came off my henry.

I also have the bachmann junior 0-6-0 and 0-4-0 which use the same moulds as bachmanns Thomas and Percy. whilst the hornby mechanisms are quieter I found the bachmann ones to be more reliable.

We have Bachamann Thomas and Percy as well as anne and clarabel and some troublesome trucks.
We also have Thomas and Percy and some sodor trucks from the hornby range.

The hornby thomas is dcc converted and runs well. The bachamann engines run excellent.

The wagons the quailty is a much of a muchness and all have stood up to a 5 and 3 year olds little hands!!

The Bachmann ones just tend to look a bit on the cheaper side. Although I do wish the Hornby range included items like Henrietta etc. Has anyone seen the Hornby 2011 range for Thomas and Friends yet?

Hi all,
Here is the next update on my progress. Yesterday was Christmas day so I finally got to unwrap my TURNTABLE. Spent this morning converting it to DCC although I must say the R8249 decoder I had was assembled quite average. Two of the wires came away from the Circuit board whilst I was installing it so I had to very very carefully resolder them to the decoder chip. But in the end as you can see below it was worth it.

I have also made a good start on putting down the cork underlay and giving the trains a test run around what I have done so far.

I am currently editing up a short video that will eventually go up on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/user/Dwarfboysim?feature=mhum it shows around the layout and the turntable in operation.

Till the next update.

Thanks,
Dwarfboysim
