Edgware GN, New loco's
Re: Edgware GN, New loco, J5
G'Day Gents
To tell the truth Ex-Pat, I can't remember, I must have bought them 45 years ago (maybe more) I always wanted to have a go at build my own chassis, so if this one works (which I see no reason why it won't) I'll be building more.

After a couple on months, with little or no railway activity, a small update, I have glued the body together, along with the smokebox door, but I have a small problem, I have two chimneys (hence two pictures) I can't decide which one to fit, until the mid 30's they had tall skinny chimneys, then some were fitted with chunkier J6 chimneys, domes varied to.

Re: Edgware GN, New loco, J5
For me, the taller one looks better - it seems weird having a dome higher than the chimney-line.
Re: Edgware GN, New loco, J5
Small class, only 10, which were very soon superseded by development into a superheated piston valve 0-6-0, both of which were in class J22 of the GNR (the superheated piston valve group became LNER J6). GNR and LNER practise with secondary power was only ever about making a working job; as required the available fitting was used, and that was that. (An oft decried feature of this was the loss of Robinson's weird taste in curvaceous chimneys for very plain GNR/LNER types which were stock items. It works, off you go...)Ex-Pat wrote:For me, the taller one looks better - it seems weird having a dome higher than the chimney-line.

Going for the long chimney, yep, the J5's had a weird collection of chimneys and domes.
Today managed to get a couple of hours in the shed, spied the Nu Cast B1, still sitting in it's tray waiting for me to have another go at the valve gear, so out came the soldering iron, 2 hours later I had a working chassis. It runs quite well but there are shorts, so not so good with the body on, I modified a Bachmann B1 body to fit, but I prefer the metal body, she will become 8301, Springbok, but in dirty wartime livery.

A small update, time is still in short supply, splashers made and some fitted, a bit of filler applied, two LNER horseboxes are nearing completion, just need to fit the couplings and then Decals.
B1's had it's number applied, looks half way decent now.

J5 body is almost finished, had it's first coat of grey paint, only lamp irons and steps to go, then it's back to the chassis and tender.

Re: Edgware GN, New loco, J5
Did the coupling rods come with the chassis kit? - they look quite the part.
Re: Edgware GN, New loco, J5
I like the scruffy look in the grey paint. Black paint, rust and filth, and it's a run down specimen overdue a mains work overhaul.

Thanks for the replies, Hi Ex Pat, yes the coupling rods come with the etch, which comes in handy, as there is more than you need.
Hi, Bigmet, this one is going to be 'Heroic' in the filth department. !
Had a bit of time today, as the Doc has told me to take it easy, as I have a bit of a Heart problem, couple of blocked veins in the heart, and there's nothing more relaxing than pottering around with model loco's, and I have another two weeks to 'Relax' before I have to go into hospital
I didn't like the smokebox door on the J5, looked more like a J4, so off it came, new smokebox dart and handrail didn't take long, some lamp irons fitted as well, then a coat of Dark Grey, a lot more 'Weathering' to go. Enjoy.

Re: Edgware GN, New loco, J5
These were the penultimate GNR general service 0-6-0 design, with a recognisable lineage back to Stirling's (he of 8 foot single fame) 0-6-0 of 1867. The final design was the (LNER classification) J6 of 1911, a piston valve and superheated development of the J5 , and that was the end for the GNR 0-6-0 development. Speeds and loads were increasing rapidly on the GNR's main line and no further 0-6-0s were constructed for this route under LNER management, Gresley favouring first the 2-6-0 for a more capable mixed traffic loco, and then later a 2-6-2.
(As a boy the only 0-6-0 I ever saw working on the BR(ER) ECML was the J6, and these were relative rarities retained for a few remaining light turns. The closely related N2, a 5'8" wheel 0-6-2 tank engine version of the J6 was 'everywhere', and these with the ex-GER N7, did most of the light goods work in the KX inner suburban area where I lived, that might otherwise have been performed by 0-6-0s. A quick trip to Snorbens or Watford for the LMR, and there Derby 0-6-0s galore on view...)

Thank you for your replies, always welcome.
Bigmet. I to can remember Wood Green to Kings Cross in steam days, N2's, J52's shunting at Bounds Green, J50's and J94 ST's at Hornsey, Great days, always coming home covered in Soot !
The J5 has had most of it's weathering done, still go a few bits to do, so I've started a new loco, mustn't get bored, This one is going to be a B8, Ex Great Central 4-6-0, the closest RTR chassis is a Hornby Dublo/Wrenn R1 0-6-0, it's only 1mm out, I have already removed the wheels and fitted larger 23mm ones, for building purposes, the body is one of the GBL D11's suitably cut and shut, it's a Goods version of the B2 I built last year, so it'll be similar but with a flat runningplate, piccy time.

Most of the parts needed have be made or cleaned up ready for use, the boiler has been glued to the smokebox, next up firebox and cab.

The J5's turned out really well, and there's obviously no stopping you with further additions already in the pipeline.
