First layout - Sneyd Green Halt

Postby McScooby » Thu Jul 30, 2009 8:38 pm

Hi everyone,

Here is my first layout, always wanted a model railway but never had time and money till now.

Its just two simple loops with a couple of sidings for some shunting, all controlled by DCC.

I've got an 08 Class Diesel and a M7 BR late black 30036 with a couple of 4 wheel carriages and 9 wagons.

All of the buildings are Scalescenes and I'm planning a Coal office, medium warehouse and some sort of tunnel over the right hand curves to hide it a bit.

hi welcome to the forum!
i see you are using the peco ballast underlay. I quite like your buildings as well, i haven't tried the scalescenes kits but have tried the superquick kits. What is the baseboard made out of?

Yeah my boss at work is well into his trains and said that for a first layout it is the easiest way to go, already started to plan a larger layout in the loft. :-)

I'm really impressed with the ScalesScenes kits, not only on quality and price but I like to build things like that, kept me quite for a week.

The baseboard is 6mm MDF, yeah couldn't resist the Police box when I found it in the local model shop.

A very good start, and I must admit I too like the Scalescene kits.

Can't wait to see more photo's as you progress.

Been unable to do to much for a while due to work.

I've made a few changes to the layout, nothing major, and decided to remove the foam and ballast the track. I was going to relocate to the loft space but the cost of getting it ready is to much at this time so its now going to live in the front room so I can make it more permant.

The control panel has started to take shape as well and pics will be posted later.

The wiring for my layout.

Just need to try and get my Class 08 to run over the points without stopping. I know its a problem with Hornby 0-6-0 trains but does anyone know if the newer 5 pole skew wound motors help here?

Yeah got feed up with trying to judge the speed of the train on the outside loop so I could filp the point to the yard. Really pleased with how easy they where to get in and working.

Got rid of the foam as I wasn't 100% happy with how it looked. I think ballesting the track in will look much better, hence the grey paint under the track to help fill in for any bits that drop off.

After getting feed up with my 08 class stalling on the points every time it went over one, I've picked up this at Stafford toy fair this morning for a good price: -

Just need to get a decoder for it but it runs perfect across every point I have, and it reverses direction without fail!

Got my self another couple of hornby wagons as well and a 4 wheel coach all for £9, well worth the trip out today. :D

Hello McScooby,
A very good start there. Looking good. Excellent filling-in of your "access-point". What will you have on-it? Rails or buildings?
Kind Regards,
Michael Thornberry.

Cheers, at this time the access point will be covered by a yard/car park for the station. Till I get my tunnel built over the right hand bend not sure if I'm just putting a wall in or workshops under the archs, like this kit http://www.scalescenes.com/products/R019-Workshops-Under-Arches. Once thats decided then I might change my plans for it, I'm planning a street on top of the tunnel with some low relief houses to the back of it.

I would have put that CDU under the board or at the very least are you going to cover it over?
Drop a screwdriver or something metal on it and you could get a bit of a shock, literally
