Eppustadt.... And so it begins again

Postby Essex2Visuvesi » Sat Feb 28, 2009 3:58 pm

Well I have finally found time to start building my layout here in finland

I had intended to do a Finnish outline layout but sadly there is almost no RTR stock in The VR livery, (Roco do one Loco) so I decided to go for German post war steam.

I have been collecting up a few things that will feature on the layout... the centrepoint being an operational cablecar system (when Finnish customs let me have it)

I am intending to use the fibre underlay from laminate flooring ontop of my baseboards... looks like this

Has anyone else tried using this before?

More track and buildings ordered today so watch this space

Good luck with "the layout in Ikea", bet that the plan changes.

good luck with it, glad to see that you got moved and settled ok.

What's happening on the garden layout plan? or are you waiting for the bears/wolves/yeti's to leave before you venture out?

I have made a few minor changes to the trackplan and a name for the station "EppuStadt"

the pics and layout were made with a program called Wintrack. http://www.wintrack.de Its rather expensive to buy but I found the CDS in a second hand shop for a 5 euros :) its not the latest version but its a whole lot of fun to play with

A quick Update on the Garden layout:-

Now the snow has melted I can see we have a major problem with making a garden layout :(
As the snow melts we end up with huuuuuge dips in the ground which slowly return to shape some of which can be up to 18" deep. In order to keep the track safe from damage I think I would need some fairly hefty and deep footings.
I have some more Ideas but I need to do some more research before continuing.

I used this on my last attempt. To my mind it worked well and was cheap. BUT you either need to glue it to the baseboard or use lots of trackpins..to go straight through the sleepers, the foam into the board.

One bit of advice would be to drill the sleepers dont be tempted to push the pins through as they will bend into the foam.

Thanks for the info :) I have Glued the boards downusing a 70/30 mix of PVA and water, spread on liberally and then weighted down with a selection of heavy household objects :)

More updates to follow today

For realism, why not make your straight sections a bit less straight. Especially the long ones on the outside of the 'L'. A bit of gentle sweeping curve would look nice, and break up that parallel geometric look.

Otherwise, I like the trackplan.

Im still working on the long rear sections, i think these will be hidden by a mountains and a gradient with maybe a "pop out" bridge. I havent as yet worked out how to create the mountains and tunnels on the trackplan software.
Ill update later with improved plans
