Although work continues on board 1 here is the start of board 2

The rough plan:



Board 2 mainly consists of a slate mine and much larger station than board 1.



The slate mine has a fairly simple track plan, which allows locos to run round trains rather than backing out onto the main line! Some of the sidings will lead into slate processing buildings. The line down into the mine is powered thus allowing locos to go to the mine entrance. I wanted to ensure the mine was slightly modern and operational so I haven't used any wagon turn tables in the plan. I may add some in if space allows.





Obviously there is still a lot of sculpting to do with the polystyrene! It will then have newspaper pasted on and will be sprayed grey. Hopefully I will then be adding some smashed up slate.The buildings will be scratch built and will appear to be made of slate (I hope ).

The station will be called "Llanwyke" which has more of a Welsh feel. The main station on board 1 will actually be called "Llanclifton" and the small station on board 1 "Llanelland". These are all local places with a Welsh prefix! The board 2 station has a passing loop on the main line, 2 bay platforms and 2 goods sidings. The farthest goods siding will be a coal yard, the nearer one general goods.

Crikey Jason, off like a whippet in this one already! I can already see this one developing in my mind's eye and I can't wait to see thissun develop just like the other module!

I'm really looking forward to seeing this one develop, as I'm planning a slate quarry on my layout, inspred by (but not a model of) the Dinorwig quarries.

I relly love the other part of this layout, really atmospeheric.

Update......Track Ballasted etc

I have ballasted, rust painted and sleeper grimed the incline & back section of track. The main reason being that access to do this later will be very difficult as the rocky mine area will obstruct it.




The main slate mine base has been shaped with a knife, had newspaper pasted onto the polystyrene and sprayed sea grey. The ramp at the front is the road vehicle access.



The main rocky section that includes the mine & tunnel entrances and fits down the left hand side has also been treated in the same way. It's currently drying.

Next job is to cut the polystyrene to create the landscape along the back between the incline & back scene.

looking good so far!
When you get to the steeper styrofoam (sorry, oops, polystyrene..gone all American then..)
back wall, similar to problems I had with some parts of Llandaft, as the top railway was so close to the lower railway, with 10cm of steep cliff to disguise, for 16 foot odd....(and still growing slowly, since the re-location..incidentally).
Some ideas for you to try...
Polyfilla.. found this partly by accident as I ran out of the stuff, halfway through...
Some folk do poly and then cover it with filla, some folk paint directly onto the cut styrene surface, but a combo of the two, with bare poly sticking thru looks ok...
Oil based paints.. I thought I could get away with a light skim of something waterproof, and use a favourite hammerite green over the top..
the result of this was it melted. Surprise surprise! but what it left was some nice fissures in the rock, where stuff had melted away, and I left it, and looks really natural. One became a stream. (The bigger goof ups got stuffed full of lichen!)

Hope you are not going to experience too many uncoupling problems with your slopes, btw.
I had a bit of grief trying to combine top railway and bottom railway into one single level at the terminus.. and then added another slight incline up to the carriage shed, if that wasn't trouble enough!
At least the turntable was on a flat! Was almost expecting to see one on yours...

Will probably use some polyfiller in certain areas of the mine.

The gradients are fine re uncoupling and loading issues. All tested before track fixed down (Including points!) - none of the points are actually on a slope. The gradient on the main line is about 1:30. The gradient down to the mine entrance is a fair bit steeper, but has been tested with a loco & some weighted trucks and works fine.

I did consider a turntable at the station on board 2 and one at the end of board 3 which will be a branch line, but decided they would take up too much space!

Update......Rocky Mine Area Painted

Nothing else to report at this stage, been doing bits on Board 1 and some rolling stock.
