Clackwick Circa 1955

Postby brammie » Mon Aug 20, 2018 12:23 pm

Notwithstanding that my layout has been under construction since 2005, I have introduced it here on the basis that it is still under construction - and is likely to be so for several years to come. Clackwick (00 gauge) is loosely based on Clacton-on-Sea and Colchester stations and the adjacent Jaywick area in the mid '50s. I was a train spotter at the time, but not able (through lack of finances and facilities) to take up a modelling hobby. Now long retired, I chose to include the Colchester location for convenience because Clacton-on-Sea was (and remains) a terminal - and having been granted a free licence in a very large spare bedroom, I was determined to have a continuous loop layout. Before loading any pictures, I hasten to add that I am not a purist - simply a guy in retirement enjoying modelling his layout; with several years more development anticipated. My first batch of pics are intended to give an idea of the dimensions and general theme of my project. If they are deemed to be of interest to site members, I will go on to include finer detail.

Agree with Ex-Pat - nice to see a new big layout on the forum, more photographs and description please, a track diagram would be good too.

Looking forward to more posts

Thank you for your encouragement guys. Rather than go into a full description of what I've been doing since 2005, at this stage I will simply say that my layout covers an area of approx 17 ft x 10 ft (reducing to 7 ft 6). It reflects various aspects of Clacton-on-Sea terminal, Colchester mainline station, and Jaywick Sands locality adjacent to the marshes in the mid fifties. I will let my pics do the talking; and be happy to answer any quesions you might have.

Keep them coming - very interesting! Your comment that your layout "has been under construction since 2005, I have introduced it here on the basis that it is still under construction - and is likely to be so for several years to come" chimes with my layout - it was effectively complete when I started posting on here in 2011, seven years later the layout is still evolving, so keep us informed of any projects that you are planning or building

Before including pictures of some of the diaoramas included my layout I should explain that several of them relate to the experiences of young lad growing up on the edge of the Jaywick marshes in the mid '50s. Whilst they all carry a strong element of truth, further explanation would not be appropriate here.

Loco 46464 was a regular at Clacton in the mid fifties. Always caught my imagination.

Last post of the day; Control. I started with a new ZTC-505, but it suffered a big failure a few years ago and ZTC seemed uncertain of their direction at the time so I opted for an ECoS, and have never regretted it. The lower pic is track layout (theoretical) and points position.
