Which Magazine for N-Gauge?

Just joined so shall look forward to receiving my first copy

Well done. I'm not sure if you get Journal 6/15 or the new one not yet published.

However, the copy deadline for 'Journal' 1/16 has now passed and the content has all been finalised and planned. The 'Newsletter' content has been received, compiled and sent off, and I'm working on the design, layout and finishing touches for the Journal. There will also be a supplier listing compendium leaflet/booklet with 1/16.

All three are scheduled for sending out during week commencing 25th January so should be with UK members by the of Jan - just time for those who are not members, but would like to get a copy, to join (see the NGS website).

I have found from initially buying all the magazines that only Railway Modeller out of the commercial magazines treats N gauge as an equal and valid gauge that goes to make up the broad church of the hobby. Others seem to me to regard OO as the only proper way to go and suffer the occasional N gauge article in the same way that Top Gear might review a 3 cylinder Dacia. Having just had my N gauge layout published in the October 2015 issue I can confirm that Craig Tilley who photographed it gave me no impression at all that wasn't bad because it is only N gauge, and bumping into both him and Steve Flint at Warley both were instantly chatty and friendly and instantly recalled the article with enthusiasm.

However I am convinced that the way to influence the N gauge content of any model railway magazine is to write an article yourself and submit it with sample pictures for publication. They handle the layout of the article - you just need to provide the words. It's not as hard as it sounds. Without reader supplied articles the magazines would just dry up.

Hi there,

Model Rail tries to put in more N gauge - recently it featured Paul Churchill's lovely Tormouth layout - and when the photographer came to take the pictures he was very complementary.

I think the problem for MR is that none of the staff writers are N Gauge modellers, so they tend to rely on others for input.

The Journal is a bi-monthy, full colour, A5 sized, around 80/90 pages, magazine sent
to members of the N Gauge Society. It features exclusively N Gauge content such as
reviews, news, 'how to' features, members models, layouts, modelling projects and so
on. In addition there is a separate 'Newsletter' publication for Society matters like
reports, notices, classified adverts, and details of Society events.

NGS Journal is the one I swear by. Even though I am in the US I have paid for it to be delivered here and am always impressed.

Mine has also arrived the w/e before last if I remember correctly.

I also subscribe to to the 'new kid on the block' 3monthly N Gauge Now, which is definitely
worth checking out. As a new publication there have been some
delays on issue dates, but things have settled down now.
