Is Lyddle End coming back

Post by michaelasc »

Its been a while since Hornby released anything for its N gauge Lyddle End range.

I'm on a mailing list for a newsletter from DM Toys in Germany, a specialist shop for N Gauge. This morning I received an email telling me about some products under the Arnold range but using the old Lyddle End product numbers. If you follow the link below you'll see N8067 Refuse Skips listed under Arnold.

https://www.en.dm-toys.de/produktdetail ... N8067.html

The description is right from the old Hornby advert: ´Lyddle End´ - a place where life goes on, regardless of the outside world. Undoubtedly inspired by the well received ´00´ equivalent ´Skaledale´, these first in a new ´N´ gauge buildings range bring a much needed realism to the small world of 9mm model railways. Each building is produced in high density poly resin and can easily, if not eagerly, be incorporated into any UK modelled railway layout.

Anyone got any ideas what might be going on?

Michael

I would suspect they are being made by the same people who made them for Hornby to sell. I think that there was a comment from Hornby that they would not be re running them. It happened back in Tring Hornby days when they had "Real Estate" they were tooled in the US, they didn't set the world alight, Triang dropped them and the reappeared from time to time as grey imports.

Arnold is part of Hornbys International ranges. Possibly its some UK stock that has been found and they have decided to try to flog it in Europe as part of the Arnold range.

What is odd is that Hornby marketed a range of N gauge buildings, having had no real involvement in N for many years. Having Arnold in the organisation it makes far better sense to offer it under that name.

Recall reading they thought it would attract collectors of miniature buildings like Lilliput Lane. Think they got it wrong by using red boxes, which apparently caused confusion to some purchasers who increadibly thought they were "OO" (or 4mm to be strictly correct). A different coloured box with Lyddle End by Hornby with the Hornby being the sole red/yellow bit may have been better. Apparently sales initially were very good but then tailed off; the same could be said of the quality of the buildings - the artist who did the originals stopped working for Hornby and then did the N gauge Bachamnn ones instead.
