Have recently found and registered for this Forum.

Hope I can share information with others and that you can also help me with information.

I a currently planning a round and round layout in a 12ft x8ft dedicated railway room, which benefits from an outward opening door.

The layout is called "Partly Maidenhead" because it is based on Maidenhead on the GW Mainline from Paddington, but only the relief lines and High Wycombe Branch junction will be portrayed due to lack of space. I will run timetables for 1960-2, 1977-9 and 1992-4. The compromises will be reduced by only portraying the ends of the platforms.

I will share the latest version when I finish drawing it later this week.

Yes, the model will be in 00, that vital fact was in the first draft of the Post but got lost along the way!

Any facts, anecdotes or questions on Maidenhead welcome.

I also have a lot of info on Slough, which was my model scene before I decided it was too big and complicated!

can I assume the 12 x 8 has a hole in the middle?

The 12 x 8 does indeed have a hole in the middle!
The baseboards will be at 5ft - 5ft 6ins high to make ducking under easier and because I hate viewing as an eye in the sky, much prefer viewing at eye level.

With you on the viewing height idea. My scheme is the scenic areas at eye level height when seated on a barstool.

On the layout planning front, given your previous Slough affiliation, are you tempted to steal an aspect of the Slough industrial estate rail system? I'd want to work in the transfer siding arrangement at least. A bit more operational interest.

Unfortunately Bigmet, as yet I have not worked out room for enough of the Maidenhead Yard for my liking, so the Slough Industrial system is not a possibility !

If I wanted more sidings I would include the Taplow yard, which is not large, but did serve as the starting point and end point for several goods trains especially from and to the High Wycombe branch especially the famous Loudwater Goods.

If I already have it that's fine, sometimes it is good to have separate confirmation of things that relate to 50+ years ago!

It is surprizing how much space a layout needs if one wants to copy a prototype location. I once tried to do Pembrey & Burry Port and it just wouldn't fit in my room. I needed an extra 4ft.

Yes, think we all have been there, but that's no surprise when we are trying to do tricks such as compress a mile of railway into a scale 1500ft.

Guess we just have to decide on the key elements and cut out some of the plain track.

Here is my first information request:-
Can anyone tell me in the 1950s/60s which of the four up and 4 down freights that stopped at Maidenhead on the Reading line delivered and or picked up coal wagons?
Or did the coal come down the branch from Wycombe on the evening train that delivered coal and picked up empties from the Branch stations?

May I suggest you put some form of padding underneath the 'duck=under'.
'It still hurts' no matter the height.
