Paint Removal
Anyone tried Dettol as a paint stripper, there's a large bottle of it in our bathroom cabinet, and I've just seen the price of the specialist stuff for models?

Re: Paint Removal
Yes, it worked very well - stripped an AHM BLl2 body with a terrible repaint back to the plastic...
No observed effects on the body afterwards.

Re: Paint Removal
Would brake fluid work or would it stop your train?
Might melt the plastic as well.

Don't use brake fluid, it does do exactly what you suggested it might do!!

Re: Paint Removal
I used Dettol to strip paint from a Scalextric car, it worked fine. I would suggest as always try a small area first maybe gently rub with a cotton bud.

Re: Paint Removal
I've used Dettol to remove paint from models before, it just takes a while for it to work and some elbow grease to scrub the paint off.

Re: Paint Removal
Happy to report 18hrs suspended in Dettol worked a treat. When I went back to it the majority of the paint was hanging off in strips, a quick scrub with an old toothbrush removed anything that was left. Because of the size of the plastic tub I used for the job it took 500ml to immerse the body. I'm on the lookout for one that is just a bit bigger than an 00 coach.

Glad all went well, if you buy fizzy drinks in the big bottles cut the top off of one, it should be big enough for a coach.

Re: Paint Removal
Given the effect of some fizzy drinks on dental enamel perhaps it would save having to buy Dettol.
