where are the members ???????

Postby 61xx » Wed Jun 10, 2020 11:55 am

It is sad to see very few contributions on any subject on here.
This potentially a very good forum. Why is it not used more ???
I admit I haven't looked for ages, but I do have a peep from time to time, nothing much changes, even items for sale are still on after several years.
Is there not a way of stirring up peoples interest ???

I note the another well known forum linked to a magazine is always busy. Is it the magazine that attracts or what. I have to say it's not a mag that appeals to me, being in the Comic category with hundreds of adverts.

Summer is slower on the forum I have noticed over the years. Perhaps all the shops being shut is another reason members cannot finish projects etc.
I'm here reading a lot at the moment mostly with not much to post about.
Thanks

I think there's a problem in that we encourage questions from newbies and answers from those with the knowledge or exoerience. What's difficult to get is contributions from those not quite so new. There's a couple of members who I can think of who fall into that category, who are passing on what they have recently learned. Contributing other than answering questions can be quite time consuming, and I can't blame anyone for getting on with the layout or latest model, without spending time documenting, or taking photos of, each step along the way, it can add considerably to the time it takes to do a job, and if they are like me thinking it out as I do it the photo's only get taken once a step has been successfully completed. If you look at my post about the two 4 wheel coaches, you can probably tell that the steps were photographed as I did the second one, having worked it out on the first. Geoff (Dad-1) knows what to photograph when he does a new wagon, he's done so many he knows what to record as he does another.
Building a chassis is probably a scary undertaking for many of our members, you've taken the plunge show them what you are doing, even if you aren't an expert at it, your experiences will be of interest.

Per 'Pete' it is all and only about sufficient participants choosing to write about what interests them.

Go on, post something more ...

If the 'other forum' is the one I'm thinking of them it was by far the most popular before it was sold to a magazine publisher. It was the first to allow unrestricted posting of photos in posts (which seems an utterly bizarre thing not to have now but most of us were on dial-up then, anything bigger than 640 pixels wide made all the lights go dim and that emergency power station in Wales kicked in), there really wasn't any competition and the one large manufacturer's forum banned any discussion of anything other than its own products. Others have come and gone in the meantime but apart from NRM and a couple of specialist gauge/scale forums it has pretty much cornered the market.

That said, the very name of this forum doesn't exactly encourage not new (pre-loved ? shop soiled ?) modellers to look in, and if they do there's no obvious 'layouts' or 'workbench' section to post in, just several variations on 'discussion'. I appreciate that it may have been set up that way deliberately. I come and answer questions but my modelling is (sporadically) on the blog in my signature or (even more sporadically) on that other forum.

Aircraft modelling is the same, there's Britmodeller and a couple of much smaller ones. Even Britmodeller only reached critical mass after a spat on one of the larger multi-national aircraft modelling forums about (IIRC) the rights and wrongs of the Falklands War.

:| Edit - ok now I've actually looked properly there is of course a workbench section and a layout section. I've only been here 12 years...

I regularly post my modelling exploits both on here and on NGRM-online (I now model narrow gauge) and I have to say that other site is way busier than this one . When I post something on there I often get several 'likes' within half an hour, and then maybe some comments after a while. If I ask a question, I get some suggested answers. On here often nothing; just silence. I understand it's a two way street, so I try to comment on other threads, but it would be nice to get some reaction to my posts too! I mean during lockdown it's not as if nobody's got the time is it .

But actually, that's an interesting word - reactions :D. It is the reactions ('like', 'laugh', 'sad' etc) on the NGRM site that let you know people are following your progress and offering encouragement. Mods @Bufferstop, @Dad-1 is there any chance the software used for this site could be configured to allow reactions please? I think it would generate more activity without members necessarily having to actually type something every time.

P.S. @61xx, if you want to see some activity, take a look at (and post on!) the two "And the next photo will have" threads! A few of us keep those going strong through thick and thin . . .

PNP I have found a patch to put in a like button. It's not supported by the developers, it involves re-compiling the core module, and it would have to be done afresh each time the software is updated (that's a consequence of not being supported). So implementing it isn't within my remit. Anyway if you really like something, say so, a few words of appreciation must be worth more than a dozen effortless clicks on a button.

61xx Rob If you are posting from a PC the easiest way to add an image that's stored on your PC is:-
Click on the attachment tab below the editing window,
then on Add files,
navigate to the file you want and open it.
the filename will appear in the Attachment window, with a button to "Place in Line"
A tag like this
nnnnnnnn_nnnnn.jpg
where the "n"s are numbers will appear in your text if you click on Preview you'll see where it will come in the post. If you want to move it cut and paste the entire tag including the brackets to the place you want it.
It will allow you five images in a post, if you can, resize them down to 1000 pixels wide as we don't run a parallel site for mobile and tablet users.
If you store your pictures on one of the hosting sites use their procedure for sharing them with HTML sites and copy and paste the URL it generates into an [IMG] tag
Shout if you get stuck.

:( but you'll have to type a few more characters before it will let you post. Don't blame me I didn't write the code. If I had it would have cost a darned site more than this one does and it would probably still be in beta testing.
