I've ordered one, the way I see it, it's a £40 donation, and I get a loco for £35. I'm intrigued as well, as you're not the first to comment that Hornby have named the loco after him, but it is in fact GBRF that have named a loco, and as Hornby do, they've modelled the livery...

Are they first come first served or is it a lottery as they are almost guaranteed to sell out.

An email from Hornby simply invited pre-orders (including Quantity).

I think they are now unlimited. Originally it was limited to 500, but they sold out almost instantly, so increased to 1000, then 1500, 2000 and now 3000.

3500 now sold out.

You can add your name to a waiting list to replace anyone who drops out.

It amazes me why a Company stops at a figure when more people want the product. Surely the more they make, more profit would be realised. Companies should stop pampering to those wanting to 'make a fast buck'.

Look out for the MGBs selling them on a well-known auction site towards the end of the year.

It depends how they're making them. Assuming that they're being done in the same factory (in China?) which normally makes their Class 66s then squeezing in a single run of 500 (minumum order) might not be too difficult, just leave 500 ordinary GBRF ones out of that run. Then they start getting massive interest and it very quickly becomes clear that these could take up a full production slot on their own. Production slots are booked months in advance so do you bump something else a few months (knowing that 'a few' could be an indeterminate number at the moment) to use its slot, or what ?

If they're being done by a couple of professional modellers (example, TMC) renumbering existing GBRF ones then there's also a limit to what you can realistically expect them to produce in a reasonable time.

There can't be much profit left out of the £35 they're making, fair play to them for effectively producing 3500 models virtually at cost.

I understand exactly what you say, stuartp.

What I do not understand with Companies in general is people want certain items, but those items are no longer being made. Surely an extended run should not be a problem. After all people are placing advanced orders for items; some items that will not be for sale until a year or two down the line.
Well that is my rant over. :)

the Hornby site has a 404 statement on the link for more than a week so I can only assume that they have sold out. :( :(

This has just worked for me

Would suspect a number of pre orders will get cancelled - people who ordered them on the basis of only being 500 so they can make a fast buck on ebay may be less keen given seven times that number are being name. Alternatively Railtec are doing transfers and nameplates for any wanting the adopt an existing model with the proceeds being donated to the NHS
Transfers https://www.railtec-models.com/showitem.php?id=4107
Nameplates https://www.railtec-models.com/showitem.php?id=4106
If needed their normal range includes orange cantrail lining if needed https://www.railtec-models.com/showitem.php?id=2074

Dapol have both a Capt' Tom Moore and an NHS Shed on offer, each with a £40 donation. At £110 a reasonably good price for an N gauge shed and £40 to the NHS is a great donation.

Unable to order both I went for the Good Captain!
