Gift ideas for railway modeller

Postby jrjclark » Fri Oct 11, 2019 2:31 pm

Hi all, my friend is really into model railways. It’s his birthday coming up and I’d like to get him a gift that has something to do with model railways. I’m not into model railways (but appreciate the effort that you all put into them) and so I really have no idea what to get him... and I don’t know what he already has. Could anyone offer suggestions on what might be a good gift to get him? I was looking to spend up to £30, but could stretch to more if it's something special.

Appreciate your help!
James

Why not a retail model shop voucher to spend on what he wishes if your not sure?
Hattons / rails of sheffield amongst others do them. Perhaps your / his local model shop too.
Thanks

How subtle are you able to be? Questions around what's planned for the layout might obtain some useful information about what is on the 'wants' list. Because it could be almost anything, a sheet of plywood for baseboard construction, some specific paint, parts to detail a model, construction kits, an MX618N, a PTA from IRM (see, now you have to deal with a foreign language!)

Most layouts can always use more figures. Make sure you check the scale.

Gift ideas for railway modeller

It would be good if you could get the following information.

Gauge and scale. (For example, 00 gauge 4mm scale).

Era (Approximate date one is modelling in...For example 1970's)..

Region (An idea of what country and part of the country one is modelling... For example, British Railways Western Region in Wales).

Knowing this information gives a much better idea of what to buy. Unfortunately you may give the game away in the surprize if you ask. Just the gauge and an idea of what sort of trains he runs will help.

Another vote for a voucher. I've told my family that. Getting one is far better than something that duplicated or is of no use to them. Safe option.

Thanks everyone. Looks like a voucher is the safe way to go. Just need to work out which one is best for him... he lives overseas.

You might want to test the idea first? I'll be happy to help, just PM and I'll reply with an address to send a model shop voucher to, and then report back on my satisfaction. (It may need more than one go of course...)

I certainly could. The combination of correct spelling, normative grammar and idiomatic English would be a highly effective formula. But why involve anyone else in my loot the credulous project?
