Class 68s pulling a nuclear waste train

Postby triuph1050 » Fri Sep 28, 2018 10:33 pm

Think I might have answered my own question but why the double headings on these trains? Is it a security issue in case of an engine failure on one. Plenty of videos on you tube and one showing two 68s with just one wagon.
Going to be very expensive to replicate have to make do with one for now :)

The practice of double heading was introduced to avoid a flask having to be left in an insecure location, due to a loco failure. It's not unknown to see three locos and a flask travelling along the Furness coast line, either to avoid a light engine move, or possibly to deal with a failed loco.
Growing old, can't avoid it. Growing up, forget it!

Given the prices for modern wagons, you might think of it as a cheap train, a realisitic formation of just two locos and a couple of flask wagons. And after all, the locos can be hauling other trains in between the fairly infrequent flask moves.

Don't forget it doesn't have to be 2 x 68. It can be any and every combo of DRS locos so if you see a decent 37, 57 or 66 in DRS livery at a good price you could put that with the 68
