Re: The Great Model Railway Challenge
I'm going to have to record it as well mjb 1961. Wife is taking me on a long weekend down to Blue Anchor in Somerset for my birthday. The place we are staying is 50 yards from the West Somerset Railway station and it's also their Gala Weekend (Friday to Sunday). I'm hoping we get a bit more of this sunshine we've been having lately.

Re: The Great Model Railway Challenge
I thought it was okay. Not sure of the actual challenges which were a bit pointless to my mind (film sets?!) but a lot of clever stuff i thought, and at least the film crew didn't concentrate on making the competitors look like oddballs as on the scottish thingy.

Re: The Great Model Railway Challenge
Given that it had to avoid turning off the casual viewer I reckon that didn't do a bad job. Mrs W was rooting for the eventual winners at the end.

She did better then my other half who fell asleep about 15 minutes in
I was also rooting for the eventual winners, really impressive the progress they made given the time - didn’t chuck the rule book out the window either

Re: The Great Model Railway Challenge
I greatly enjoyed the programme, it came over to me as very well made and entirely objective about the hobby. I thought that the way that the judges dealt with Gt Missenden team stretching the rules beyond the spirit of the competition was very fair and placed Gt Missenden back on a level playing field with the other two teams. The choice of 'films' as a theme for the first round was interesting and exciting, giving ample scope for teams to choose an era and location that suited them. It also stimulated imaginations and enabled the viewing public to see what can be achieved, especially when the shoe and lipstick were introduced. I and Mrs K are really looking forward to the rest of the series.
Finally: go for it Tonbridge MRC, I'm with you in spirit!!

Re: The Great Model Railway Challenge
I think it should have had the planning and prep time shown and a longer period allowed. At least the arrogant Captain got his comeuppance.
But like any project, if the team is given a wishywashy scope, don't expect to get what you wanted or completed on time!
But then ridiculous aspirations, controversy is what makes light entertainment!
'Any publicity good publicity'
Personally, I can only applaud the emphasis on the animated devices and sounds.

Re: The Great Model Railway Challenge
I thought that the one teams effort in the scratchbuilders challenge was hilarious. Cover the shoe in green and hope it blends n...
It made it look like the cookie monster.
To be fair though, the team that did this did some amazing modelling. The whole layout was transformed from white plaster into green using spray paints in a very short time which was amazing. I was actually surprised that they didn't win that one as I preferred it to the one that did win as their hills didn't look so good with the grass mats, even though they did brilliantly in the challenge and very well in general. I think that they actually finished may have won it for them.
The team who bent the rules a bit did end up with a good layout, but they were taking the biscuit a bit regarding the prebuilds. Most of their layout was prebuilt though I can sympathise as there was a lot to build in a short space of time.
I actually found the competition exciting and fun.
