Re: Converting Hornby tank engines
The current transformer controller packs that Hornby provide typically put out 21Vac from the plug pack that is what I get from a 240v home system, by replacing the original Hornby wall pack with a 12Vdc supply it reduces the output power on the controller, this enables slow start, stop and scale speeds to be achieved, I have used this setup for several layouts both N and OO gauge and it has always worked for me.

Re: Converting Hornby tank engines
If you use a controller which specifies an AC input be cautious of running it off a DC one. It will work, the motors may run much more smoothly, but you may find that either they keep running very slowly when the speed is set to zero or they sit there quietly getting rather hot. It's because of the way some circuits switch the current, they only stop conducting when the supply drops below zero ie. goes negative. If you feed them DC this doesn't happen. It doesn't mean you can't enjoy any benefits of feeding them on DC you just have to ensure that the reversing switch has a centre OFF position, or fit an ON/OFF switch in the output leads.
