Yep, same here, my current layout track isn't suitable and Id on't have the space to build another layout and so it's only been tested once on a rolling road.mjb1961 wrote:Hi atnas666 ,,,,,,yes I still have my live steam ,,,,the mallard set and the flying Scotsman set ,,,both are the complete sets with track and controllers etc ,,,I haven't really done anything with them apart from a run on the rolling road ,,,,,,what about yourself ,,,mjb

Re: HORNBY live steam ,,any owners ?
I used to have one and it ran best with 10 or 11 LNER coaches behind it. You needed a good 8 coaches to give some drag, as it wouldn't have fly off the rails if it had nothing behind it. Doesn't take long to master driving it and I quickly learnt how to get the best from it and was able to keep it in steam for three to four times longer then suggested. (I seem to remember running close to two hours once with the same water being as conservative as possible with the use of steam. The key was to turn down the power to minimum once steam had been raised and go easy on the regulator).
I did have fun with it but after not owning it for long, I was in the position of needing funds for the mortgage without an income so as it wasn't comparable with DCC or DC I let it go at just over half what I had paid for it to a friend.
It is a shame that Hornby didn't take the opportunity to make it comparable with DCC, as if I run my Lens boosters in series I have 8 amps available for the use of which should be adiquate for live steam generation.

I had a thought, and someone must have had the same one because I've seen, just the once, an exhibition layout laid out this way.Lancastrian wrote: my current layout track isn't suitable and Id on't have the space to build another layout ...
A conventional railway station and tracks (oval plan) and a live-steam double track (also oval) crossing this on a high level viaduct.
A back-story of a newer, smoother main line would fit, or even just rival companies.
