GWR Clerestoy Coaches

Back in 2012 I purchased the Hornby, “London Olympics 1908” set being:

x1 GWR, 4-4-0 County of Radnor, plus
x1 3rd Class Clerestory Composite Coach ‘953’, plus
x1 3rd Class Clerestory Brake Coach ‘3379’

I am now attempting to put together some background notes in the form of an Information Sheet and would appreciate some help:

There is ample information available on the GWR, class 38** 4-4-0 County Class locomotive. However I am struggling to find any historic information on the two clerestory coaches, such as Dimensions, Designer (an individual or team) and Build Dates. Any links, or other help would be appreciated.

Additionally ALL fourteen doors on the eight compartment Composite Coach have ‘THIRD’ emblazoned on them, so are there any thoughts on why this is described as ‘Composite’?

Hi John,

As far as I'm aware these are Dean coaches and have been in the Hornby range since the eighties as has the loco. The GWS at Didcot have quite a few Dean coaches but I don't think there are any the same as the Hornby models.

As to the reference to one all third being a composite Hornby don't have a good track record (sorry!) for getting the information right. I seem to remember a catalogue listing a Stanier 8F as a 4-8-0.....
