As in 'Mainline' product produced in the 1970s to early 80s? If so standard pinpoint axle wheelsets from Bachmann, Hornby, Markits, Romford etc will fit with no alterations required. Usually to be found with a little looking around 12mm diameter wagon types available in split spoke, solid spoke, three hole disc and solid disc, nominal 14mm diameter discs for coaches.

If you want to add small tension lock couplers the Bachmann 36-025 type will fit as a direct replacement. That will improve the looks and bring them right up to date!

whats the best way of getting old wheels out / new ones in? Gentle force with the fingers? Or is there a better way?

That's the only way! Ease one sideframe outwards, lift the pinpoint out that side, the other side then comes free. Reverse for installation, locate pinpoint one side, ease out frame the other side and locate the pinpoint.

If possible grip the centre of the axle whilst pressing out wards on one sideframe, when putting in the replacement wheels. It might appear easier to lever between the wheel face and the plastic with a small screwdriver. This can cause the wheel to move on the axle, usually not quite enough to derail the bogie, until it gets to a set of points. It's useful to have a back-to-back gauge for checking and setting wheels on axles. Even brand new models can be found with the wheels too close together or too far apart.
