GWR coach transfers

Postby flying scotsman123 » Mon Oct 28, 2013 5:59 pm

Hi, I'm looking for transfers for the lining (black/gold) and the GWR roundels for some coaches I'm doing up. I'm sure I spotted some for a few quid a while ago, but looking around today the cheapest I can find is about £12. is this really the going rate for some lines on a bit of paper? Or am I missing something? mostly when I do a search i end up with loco lining, which I don't want :(

The best transfers I know of are from HMRS:

http://www.hmrs.org.uk/transfers/transf ... ferid=1011 also

http://www.hmrs.org.uk/transfers/transf ... ferid=1010

Price is 6.50.

Fox and Modelmaster might do something similar.

fox was the one I was talking about, £12 for lines, as I said, seems a bit steep to me... i had seen the second link you gave but not the first, thanks, it is more than I need but I'm sure I'll find a use for it at some point, I may venture into painting my own locos one day. Although both of those sheets have more than I want, it's still better than the fox transfers with less on! Having said that, how many lines are there on the HMRS one, it is difficult to tell from the picture? I'm sure I found some cheaper still, but that's way better than the Fox ones, cheers :)

These sheets can be frustrating. There is a lot of stuff, but usually you only need a small fraction. Then again, you sometimes need one or two more of some bits than supplied. The other thing is that you have make up the coach numbers yourself - very fiddly.

not too worried about extra stuff, just whether there is enough of what I need. there are enough roundels, but has anyone bought the lining sheets? if so, how much gold/black lining is there on it?
thanks

new idea, print my own! with inkjet transfer paper, you need to seal it with an "acrylic spray" according to crafty computer papers. will my trusty hairspray work for this?

Yes you can try that. I made lining transfers for my rake of LSWR coaches (there's a thread here somewhere), using Powerpoint and Microscale transfer sheets. It worked well. However, I only did it because there were no commercial transfers available. You can buy purpose designed coating sprays from Microscale or Testors (perhaps others). I used Krylon Matte varnish.

Numbers, crests etc are another matter though - best to use professional transfers for that I think.

It's only the GWR shirtbutton roundel, not exactly complex. I'm going into cheltenham model shop tomorrow, if there's nothing there I'm printing my own, should save lots of money :D
