My excuse is I've been in the hobby, seriously, for over 35 years now, and nearly half of mine are kit-built locos, with regularly upgraded chassis; but the real joy is that rtr is now so much better, and I have far less time, so I no longer kit -build locos. :D

Edit, No make that nearly 40 years now!! Doesn't time fly when yer havin' fun??

Lets see...most of my collection is just what I like, in some cases, I'll buy 3 or 4 of them :P

A4 Silver Fox (LNER Silver)
A4 Mallard (LNER Garter Blue)
A4 Golden Plover (BR Green)
A4 Sir Nigel Gresley (BR Express blue)
A3 Flying Scotsman (NRM LNER Doncaster Green)
V2 Green Howard (LNER Doncaster Green)
J94 (LNER Black)
J94 (NCB Green)
J94 (NCB Private owner)
Jinty (BR Black)
L&Y Pug (LMS Black)
City of truro (GWR?)
J83 (LNER Black)
B12 (LNER Green)
Oh, And Percy :P

DP1 (Prototype livery)
Class 55 (BR Green)
Class 28 (BR Green)
Class 20 (BR Blue)
Class 08 (BR Blue)
Class 14 (BR Green)
Class 47 (Police Livery)
Class 47 (DRS)
Class 47 (EWS)
Class 37 (EWS)
Class 57 (Virgin Thunderbird)
Class 60 (EWS)
Class 66 (DRS "Eddie the Engine")

Having listed my collection, I don't have much diversity in terms of steam locos, as most of my stock is NE based, however, my diesel locos are much more diverse, in recent years with how expensive everything has become, I've resorted to buying stuff I like, the most recent being the Class 28, my favourite diesel loco. I've also realised I've hoarded loads over the years. It's probably time to thin down my collection :p

I never intended to have a diverse collection, in fact no Collection at all.
All I wanted were BR blue diesels .........................
I have managed to keep to most specific requirements, although where did those steamers come from ??
No non-UK, oldest periods CoT, 43XX, but most GWR late pre-war to 1948
Scotland a Killin Pug and CR 439 class.
Otherwise all BR early & late steam, plus blue diesels, how did that Arriva Wales 150 DMU sneak in ??
Sorry to be so controlled & boring, but it's the best way to keep some money in your pocket !

I'd just like to say that this thread would be a lot more entertaining and informative with photos. 8)

I've been in nearly 50 years, though a gradual move across gauges have resulted in numbers being kept at a reasonable level, when I change area or gauge I sell off my other stuff to fund the new stuff, though if I still modeled SG I'd struggle to keep numbers down looking at RTR these days...
