Re: BARGAINS!
All my ballast is used dried tea leaves. Loose tea is best as the leaves from teabags seem a bit fine. This is fixed in place with a very strong mix of wallpaper paste which contains fungicide and so mould has never been a problem. When I first tried used tealeaves as a child I fixed them in place with flour and water as I couldn't afford glue in those days . The flour and water version did go mouldy and the ballast has to be removed. I've been using the wallpaper paste version for decades without problems. It's also easy to lift the track if you need to without damaging it, as it's weaker than the diluted PVA that people normally use.Lancastrian wrote:Being organic if it gets damp it will be susceptible to mould.boatsman wrote:Can dried powdered tea from tea bags be used for ground cover, or will it rot?

Re: BARGAINS!
Hereford Model Centre still have Bachmann 3 pack wagons from £25.95. Good quality wagons for new railway modellers,if a bit dated.

Don't quite get the "if a bit dated" reference. But good spot of bargains. Perfect if they fit a rolling stock requirement/layout, and still value as volume filler for newbs.mkrob wrote:Hereford Model Centre still have Bachmann 3 pack wagons from £25.95. The weathering would probably be why. I suspect there's still a majority of us who as new buyers, like our kit pristine, or if wishing to weather, prefer to do so ourselves. The cattle wagons aren't, but they are both regional and time period specific. Regardless, great pricing per unit in 2021 for those who can make use of them. Good spot. Bachman rolling stock even of a decade ago was and remains of a quality standard. Thanks for reporting.
P.S. Back in the Hattons reselling of Bachmann in the days following the GFC, among so many other bargains I picked up several similar x3 package sets of Bachman Blue Circle decorated bulk cement wagons for around this price per pack, and that was a great price even then. I shudder at the thought of what their current new SRP would be today when/if available.

Re: BARGAINS!
The cattle wagons & tanker wagons were added to Hereford models catalog in August 2012.It tells you that just below the "add to cart" box. So they have had them for a while. I've purchased a few Bachmann 3 packs from Hereford models over the years & are good quality (3 sets of tankers & a pack of box wagons all for under £30 each). They are not up to Accurascale standards. As long as you are not a rivet counter(which I am not),no problem.I've posted about there exclusive wagons a few times over the last 5 years on here & on RMweb.
Re: BARGAINS!
Which is all the the good, because they match decently finished kit built models of which I have a good number, many of them representing essential 'character' subjects.mkrob wrote:...They are not up to Accurascale standards...
(But I do await with interest the first suitable Accurascale product that fits my BR(ER) very early 60s at the latest modelling.)

Check out the August Bank Holiday sale at Model Railways Direct. Lots of Hornby and Bachmann rolling stock bargains, including Hornby 4- and 6-wheel coaches at 30-40% off. Good prices by today's standards IMHO so worth a look.

Re: BARGAINS!
Ample space in the Bachmann 9F tender, if you are prepared to rearrange the existing wiring. Alternatively, clearing the smokebox of the clumsily mounted 8 pin DCC socket and the posts it is screw attached to might make enough space - never having seen the TTS gear I don't know how much room it requires. (A 'full size' HO decoder like the Lenz Gold goes in without difficulty with the decoder socket in place.)

Re: BARGAINS!
As Bigmet says, the tender may be the best place to put it. Fitting the original speaker may be difficult, so a replacement one with better sound may be beneficial. There is info on fitting a TTS decoder in a 9f on another forum for the Hornby & Bachmann 9f.
