Can't really tell without seing it. If your friend has a more advanced controller than the Select you could ask him to enter 8 into CV8. This will reset the decoder back to factory settings.

a little hard as he lives in Derby, and we live in North East? Anything I can do from home with just a SELECT? Instructions mite as well be in chinese for all I can understand them

Remove all locos for the tracks and then place the one to be readdress on the rails on its own then use the Select to set a new address number in the range 1 to 59. (Note the Select automatically address the zero (0) in front of entered numbers 1 to 9).
