Buying (Used, Mind Condition) Track Help/Advice

Postby Disco21 » Wed Dec 07, 2011 8:14 am

Hi all

I thought I'd already posted this help request, but nevermind. Following on from my thread, re: Flying Dutchman/King William/Orient Express, we decided to part with £70 and go for Dutchman from chap, local to where we live, who was looking to sell his a few bits and pieces.

The Dutchman is in excellent condition, bought for £103 within the last year (RRP £139). Whilst we were there, he also mentioned he was looking to sell some of his massive collection of track (also as new). The track itself has been bundled seprately (ie: curves, straight, points etc), and not as actual track packs.

So, my question is... Taking into account the prices below (which are from this website), If I can get him to sort of the track, into actual packs, how much do you think I should offer for the following:

Track Pack B - £22.70
Track Pack C - £22.00
Track Pack D - £35
Track Pack E - £22.80

As far as I know, there is no proper boxes for the track itself (although it wasnt mentioned if there was or not!)

I would say around 50-75% of retail prices depending on condition. Maybe offer him about £50 for the lot and work from there. I myself wouldnt pay more than 70 tho

The only stupid question is the one I didn't ask

As long as it is all "as new", remember "used, mint" is impossible!! I've seen too many cases at swapmeets where they sell bundles of track and put a decent piece on the top and bottom and the stuff in between is c**p... Its your money so ask for the bundles to be separated so you can see what you are getting...

Lulled into a false sense of security... I'm not doubting his honesty, however he should respect your right to inspect the goods, if he's as honest as you say he won't object, will he?!

2 packs will give you plenty (Sons layout is a variation on the trackmat) you might well get away with 1 pack but the pins are easily bent so its better to have more than you need

It depends if you just want some track for "short term playing", I think a lot of people here would say if setting up a quality layout they would usually go for new track. If not you need to be very careful what you buy, don't feel forced to buy full bundles if there's some you don't like the look of.
