I was told this by a British H0 finescale modeller who showed me his Black 5 which was the societies (At that time) only kit which had been built up by the member and it really was good. But as it was built to finescale standards, no way would it go round curves that most people had on their layouts.
I believe the kits can be built to negotiate sharper curves ? I would imagine it is to do with chassis spacing?

Quite, it's for the builder to decide just what overall frame width will be utilised. My first OO kit chassis was 13.8mm over the frames, built as supplied, and what with the bosses on the inside of the wheels wasn't for going around any curve. Well that was a quick lesson, take it all apart, and rebuild to 12mm frame width. Then it would just manage 24" radius (all flanged 0-6-0).
