Re: Stirling single announced
wow thats expensive!
The base model is £199 - adding sound takes it up by £90 which is not a bad price for the update its the base cost which is off putting
good for them for choosing a unique prototype to model but at that price i wonder what the demand for it will be?

Re: Stirling single announced
They will get enough sales, no doubts there. It was no secret that the Stirling single was consistently near the top of the 'most requested' list, whenever NRM visitors were asked what they would like to be able to purchase as a model. The good thing is that it also represents a significant technical advance in the UK; here's the way to build the front end of an express loco, leading bogie, cylinders between the bogie wheelsets. This was taken directly from the well proven 'American' 4-4-0 pattern.
Price; well just try building a good working model for less. Not easy to build and it will cost you more. I am in for one, order already placed for the proper big tender version. There's another good thing, that the model has been announced with either of the tenders available. For me it has to be proper big tender that was standard when these were running, almost dwarfs the loco; and gives some idea of just how much coal they burned when opened out to full chat.
I think it will sell overseas too. Very famous in its day, it was the Concorde of its era, the fastest passenger transport on the planet. Among other measures of its fame are that it appeared on more postage stamps than any other locomotive, all around the world; that's according to a very elderly relative who is the keenest stamp collector imaginable. And it just happens to be very elegant too.

Re: Stirling single announced
Well at least they are unlikely to get anyone telling them "A Striling Single doesn't sound like that".
Growing old, can't avoid it. Growing up, forget it!

Re: Stirling single announced
I have since been to Locomotion at Shildon to meet the happy crew there, and refamiliarise myself with Mr Stirling's 'peerless aristocrat' of a locomotive. They have helpfully put a very good scratchbuilt 4mm model in a display case to give an idea of what the money buys you. This one really is challenge after challenge, splashers enclosing wheels with no clearance, difficulty concealing the drive, the cylinders which need to be part of the mechanism faired into the fooplate/smokebox, and a refined shape that has to be right to capture the elegance.
Re: Stirling single announced
Is getting closer, a running but unpainted sample was displayed at York Show this last weekend. It can be run on set track second radius too, which is going some for a locomotive with such tight clearances around the wheels. Clever design features to enable this, so while this model is expensive, the purchaser is getting their money's worth. As for appearance, it looks as lovely as it should even in grey. (Keep in mind here that I am a total enthusiast for this class, a key step on the path to the ultimate high power steam locos for UK service, a real 'must have' for me to show off the Doncaster achievement.)
Realistically available sometime in the last half of the year if all goes smoothly from here, so will be somewhat more than two years from original announcement. Which is 'rocket speed' progress these days...

Re: Stirling single announced
Will the model be a true single or a 4-2-2-0 I wonder?
Re: Stirling single announced
Rear carrying axle gear coupled to the single driver with appropriate ratios for matching tyre speed, so it will be functionally equivalent to a 4-4-0 as a model; but really the arrangement is the 4-2-2-0 you propose.
It's a good solution to yield enough traction for the sort of train lengths these locos pulled. There may be some folks who will want to try disengaging a gear so that the rear axle is unpowered, and then see how it does. I will probably be one of them, tinker, tinker, tinker. Not least of the reasons I want this model is to see how current commercial model making technique tackles the several difficulties associated with this particular Single design. It has all sorts of challenges in constraint of the wheelbase flexibility thanks to close fitting splashers on the bogie and driving wheels, and a pair of large cylinders limiting bogie swing.

Re: Stirling single announced
Yes an interesting set of problems. I can only think that they must shave the inside of the cylinder as much as possible to increase bogie swing, and maybe move them further out? Alternatively the pivot of the bogie might be in its center, with the drive wheel fixed as that can't move from side to side at all, and the rear axle able to move sideways. That would act a bit like an 0-6-0 with play in the rear axle. Time will tell anyway!
Re: Stirling single announced
The latest Rapido news sheet shows a second EP sample of the Stirling Single looking very neat, looks like the fit and alignment questions raised by the first EP have been addressed. Probably first half of 2018 for delivery now I should think.
Re: Stirling single announced
I couldn't get the link to work, but I was most amused by the sites message given from the link. Here it is below.
THE PAGE YOU ARE LOOKING FOR CANNOT BE FOUND.
It may have been moved, renamed, dropped down a catch basin, eaten, run over by a jellyfish, transmogrified, or - most likely - beamed to Phaester Osiris along a time corridor. If you were brought here by another part of our web site, please contact us to let us know of the broken link. If you were brought here by some other web site, go pester them instead.
Now that is worth looking at a link which does not work!

Rapido's founder and owner, Jason Shron, is a guy with a greatsense of humour, and he appears to have successfully recruited a like minded team.

Re: Stirling single announced
Production samples on show at Warley. The photos tell me what I want to know, it looks right, and certainly well exceeds my ability to build a model of this very difficult subject. Looking forward to taking delivery of my order in a month or three, and seeing just how much it will pull. Their express service load was about 150 tons of train - that was a lot of vehicles when coaches were light weight four and six wheelers - and it was the coming of bogie coaches weighing 30 tons and up in the 1890s that saw them necessarily superseded by four coupled power as trainloads roughly doubled in weight.
(Most famously the Ivatt large Atlantic, a RTR model of which the NRM have already provided. So 'all' I have to do now is build a 'little Sharpie' or something to represent the first generation of traction on the GNR, and I will have the whole steam express traction story on the ECML sorted, sort of...)

Re: Stirling single announced
'RapidoBill' currently at the factory has posted pictures of the single in assembly, including the track circuit on which the running of each mechanism is tested. Getting closer...
Re: Stirling single announced
This a very good prototype to model. Its beautiful. I can see the attraction. They will need to make some suitable rolling stock to go with it.
A model of this type of locomotive is not going to be cheap due to the different shapes and details one needs to include a long with the drive mechanism required.
The issue with singles is that one wants just the single pair of drive wheels to be driven, but also to have suitable weight on the drive wheels and stability so the other wheels dont detract from the reactive force of the drive wheels. Triang had a really good idea which can be used here in including ridges on the drivewheel tyres so that they grip well. If all trailing wheels have pickups to compensate for the ridges on the drive wheels, it could provide a logical answer for the traction issue without the need to unrealistically power any trailing wheels.
