The Hornby Cl.71 SR electric 3rd rail loco.I wanted to convert one of these as there is a dearth of Dublo SR locos. These were used to haul the Night Ferry from Waterloo which was the heaviest paseenger train at 800 tons in the UK at the time, they also hauled the Golden Arrow as well. The 3 rail conversion was one of the most challenging i have had so far but it runs & is a powerful loco.I hope to have a youtube video in the near future. The couplings are a bit of a problem but hopefully here is my answer at the moment to the NEM Dublo coupling,A Trix plastic Mk1 coach coupling with a piece of plasticard welded to the shank & shaped to fit the socket for a friction fit.It shouldn`t have been cranked but i welded the card to the wrong side of the coupling,Hopefully, the Mk2 version will be better.

Neat job, that took some persistence to get the reliable running result! There won't be many H-D 3 rail layouts boasting one of these.

So where next to rectify the 'dearth of Dublo SR locos' ? The Bulleid diesel prototypes produced by Kernow Model Centre would offer similar heavyweight drive characteristics and a fair length of underside to accomodate a pair of skates at a distance selected to avoid 'gapping'.

When i was testing this loco,it was trundling around the layout for some time & then the PCB decided to give up the ghost with a resistor sparking & burning out.Result?,no lights. It`s a dual layered board so no chance of repairing it but i can live without the lights, they were a bit toylike anyway. Lovely models though, just a bit too delicate to run really, most of my conversions of modern stock seem to end up with detail falling off and having to be glued back.

Sweet runner, and the loco styling is a good fit for the general appearance of Dublo kit I feel.

(I thought we were going to get the trailing smoke as the component burned out on this video. :( It makes a good effect on a steam loco, my last an Oxford N7 on which the suppression capacitor went 'phut!'. The loco itself unaffected, but the trailing grey smoke looked very good for the couple of seconds over which it happened!)

Another neat job. Did the experience gained with the class 71 smooth the path on this project?

Not really,i`ve been converting quite a few out of the ordinary models for a while now,for instance,a Graham Farish 00 4-6-0 Cl.5 with the original 2 pole motor but it wasn`t a howling success,it didn`t like Dublo 3 rail points.Would i do another one?,no.

As you can see ,these are a few of my convversions, some more difficult than others.

Particularly impressed with the A2, looks very well in an H-D setting. (I so wanted one of these when young, but in what was a cash only economy, and with a retailer who would not order or reserve stock for those under 18, was never there at the right moment when one came into stock!)
