They were not cheap when first released. The timber finish requires a multi-pass printing process, and is very expensive, although it does produce a fine result. The same coach bodies finished in a BR paint livery are a lot cheaper.

They are expensive but the effect looks brilliant, i managed to get two from local model show but even second hand they where still £25 each!  they pop up on sale every now again:

The hornby price increase has made these an extortionate price, even secondhand these coaches have started to become rare in their appearances on ebay and are starting to reach the £40-£45 mark. It is the printing process that makes them expensive I have started to backdate some hornby maroon coaches with precision teak paints, not as good finish as the printed teak but a lot cheaper and with some weathering the coach doesn't look to shabby.

I picked up a rake of four a while back and put them in the cupboard on a whim. I was looking to see how much they were to judge a price for the classifieds. I'm amazed how much these cost
I might keep hold of them.

I managed to pick up three buffets for £14 some time ago when Hattons were selling off the first batch, as donors for Comet sides. The printing is gorgeous and they've always been dearer than the BR liveries, but at that price I'd go for the Comet kits and learn to scumble. It wouldn't be so bad if they were perfect at that price but they're not - they're too slab sided.
