have hornby finally lost the plot?

Postby TK421 » Tue Dec 24, 2013 3:46 pm

At the risk of being accused of being a Hornby basher i thought i bring you to the attention of a rather alarming statement I've read. Whilst on the model railways direct website for mobiles i clicked on the j15 to see if it was ready for pre order. The site claims that Hornby have forbidden mail order and web sales of 2014 items! And advises you to call before visiting the shop to purchase. This is only on the mobile site and I've yet to see it on the full site or any other site. Can this be true? Or have Hornby really lost it this time?

Frankly, this is highly unlikely and probably not something which could be legally enforced anyway. I couldn't see Hornby wishing to enter into such restrictive practices.

It's quite possible that Hornby do not want the entire production run to be gobbled up by pre-sales. Could be back to old times, Meccano used to tell Hornby-Dublo dealers how many they were getting, when there was stock to ship. Dealers took pre orders on their own necks

I think MRD have a problem, On the main site the J15 is listed at full RRP but when you click on the pre-order button you're told it's sold out. Likewise the new 2HAL that's listed at a whopping £194.95 but again showing as sold out. No problem with Hatton's though.

No edit button! But this is what the site says for 2014 items:

"See all the new products for 2014 from Hornby. We are currently updating the pricing and availability on the system, we expect this to take a little longer than planned and we expect to be able to take pre-orders in the next few days."

The full site you see on pc has been the same for days but if you go on the mobile site on your smart phone and click on a 2014 product you'll get that message.

Tk421 is right, but the mobile site is saying that Hornby is forbidding web sales (not just preorder ). Surely this must be a mistake?

Something similar occurred some years ago with an American manufacturer who tried to ensure that their goods sold at the recommended retail price, attempting to restrict discounting on their goods. The supposed intent was to ensure a similar sale price across all stores, thus small volume sellers were not disadvantaged by box shifters.

Or it could simply be that MRD have a problem with their website so don`t panic and try later.

If you think Hornby are trying to protect small model shops, I suggest you visit one and talk to proprietor. They will give you a very different story indeed.

Do we know the whole wording in the terms and conditions. No I don`t think we do so I suggest we all give it a rest as no good is being done. I also notice it is the normal bash Hornby contingent doing the stirring.

Do I have the last laugh ?
I have no intention of buying anything in the Hornby range during 2014.
