Hornby 86 637 anyone ?

hi all,

Ive been looking into getting a 86 for repainting, as its looking increasingly likely that they wont produce the livery im after
depsite the 86's wearing it for many years, and as the heljan one's are very expensive ive been looking at getting a Hornby one.
86637 in freightliner, R3058.

Ive seen conflicting info on the motor (ringfield or 5-pole skew round), and wether or not, it is 'all wheel pickup' ............

can anyone who has one, or knows better, advise what is the case with this model please ?

Personally I would shell out the extra and buy the Heljan model, unless you can pick up a really cheap Hornby one and maybe double motor it, although not perfect see the thread:-

I think it's a good representation and has extremely good haulage qualities.

The good thing is they are also now running as single locos on the WCML F/L'ers so you only need to buy one...

I personally think the Hornby 86 is better looking than the Heljan offering, so another option would be to buy one of the newer DCC ready "Limby" ones and respray that.

It's ok if you only want to pull a couple of spine wagons not a full train

Search you tube for me,scott17373,my son has one and did a review...basically same as old one with staggered traction tyres on power bogie

Sorry just seen that reply. Works fine on a rake of 8mk2's plus DVT for me. Bit more than a few spine wagons. Runs better with a decent decoder in I use Lokpilot.
