Hornby R2778 GWR 0-4-2T

I fancy a GWR 0-4-2 14xx,

However these are no longer available and I'd prefer not to use the Dapol or Airfix versions. Before I continue hunting I'm curious to see if anyone on here has one and how it behaves, particularly over insulated frog points. Also has it got traction tyres ? which would make for even worse electrical pickup, but perhaps improve traction, which must be very limited with such a small loco.

Yes it has traction tyres. Doesn't really have a problem with points, it's got a similar wheelbase to an 060.

BTW don't worry about getting a Dapol one. The Dapol chassis is unchanged in the Hornby one. Avoid the Airfix clunker though...

If I want one it looks like secondhand - so later Dapol should be O.K (obviously subject to condition) Any idea when Hornby dropped these ?
I just fancied something different ......

Was fortunate enough to get an hardly-used,pre-owned late crest version of this last year from Steviesparx.
Tremendous performer,considering it's size.........

I will find one somewhere, got my eye on a Dapol on Ebay, although as I often say I'm a product snob and will always buy new if available.

Steve offered me this one,as I'd put in an offer for an early crest version he was selling,but that had already gone.
He'd sold me a Prairie previously(another gem!) & I (rightly,as it happened) presumed this would be just as good......
While I have two Railroad tank engines(the LMS 3F & Caledonian pug;both found unboxed at a car-boot for peanuts),the rest are Western Region.I just think that the WR made great tanks anyway & sadly other regions aren't so well-represented in RTR form.I'm also not too-good when it comes to kits.........
BTW-I didn't understand the Split-Shift reference,as I'm a bit slow

Hi Phipps,

I was refering to what used to be called split shifts on the busses when you do an early morning, and then back for the late afternoon to end of service.
Mind you you may not be driving now ??

We don't get such a privilege mate........
Some start at 7am & finish at 7pm with two x hourly breaks.There's even one of the decker runs that begins at 6.30 & finishes at 8pm
Mysteriously that one seems to be a bit of trouble to cover at the moment;I wonder why nobody seems to want to be a decker-driver?
BTW-I partly bought myself an 0-4-2T because I love the one in the Ealing film "The Titfield Thunderbolt".....

I'm looking for an unboxed mint working GWR liviered Airfix 0-4-2T, discovered a perfect box with instructions for one as we were smashing up some spare empty Hornby boxes for the recycling the other day.

We have been smashing up and burning surplus boxes for months Phipps. A mate tried selling them on EBay for me, but it was so much hastle sitting down, listing them, doing the photo's, it was easier and quicker to just smash the boxes up and burn them, we just didn't have the time to deal with them. Tri-ang, Tri-ang-Hornby, Dapol and Hornby boxes have all done the big firework.

Well, in London we call them spreadovers. Don't mind them myself, as I live within walking distance of the garage and can go home for lunch (if you'd ever used our canteen you'd understand the attraction of that) and put my feet up for a bit.

Phipps, those duties you mention sound absolute horrors. And we thought we were badly off where I work...

I find this incredible from someone who in another thread is preaching the virtues of keeping things boxed and unrun...
Surely you could have let fellow forum members know, maybe available for collection from you - didn't you have a shop ?
Burning is just ridiculous, a waste, not to mention all that extra carbon into the atmosphere...shame !

They rang me at 5.51 this morning,wondering if I wanted to do the b*****d-thing again today! Told him I nearly lost the plot last week & was happy enough with the 9-5 instead.
Still pulled in £107+ from two Sheringham-Norwich-Sheringham runs(4 journeys) & 60% of the punters were Concession card holders...........
