Class 56 lights not working

Postby 58001 » Sun Feb 14, 2010 10:35 am

I have recently aquired a class 56 EWS 56059 and when running it yesterday, the lights on cab no 1 end did not work (either front or rear)
Has anyone ever had this fault, and if so what could be the possible reasons for it?

P.S i have taken the lid off and seen the spring contacts which seem to be ok.

I had loads of issues with the same loco I bought.

I think they upgraded the contacts after this model on both the 56 and 60.

You just have to ensure the contacts look straight and not over bent and hope they meet..

Also make sure the body is sat on the loco correctly.

My loco was ok oiut of the box it was after I had put the decoder in and refitted the body, got there in the end, just be careful and perservere..

I think there may be an issue with early ( can motor with flywheel ) 56 lights in general...
I bought a few ( ! ) of these cheap, all with suspect lighting. After removing the bodies and checking the light ( LED ) modules themselves, there seems to be a number of faults which could only be down to manufacturing error...
One set had white ( headlight ) LEDs OK, but no red - on checking polarity, the red did light up when reverse connected !
Another set had both red and white LEDs connected reverse polarity...
..another set had only red working.

So, you can see why I believe there may have been an early manufacturing error - The models I bought were, AFAIK returns, hence the price. I would be pretty p****d if I'd paid full price...

Should also say I found no fault with the connections on the chassis, only with the light modules themselves.

If you want to investigate further, then the modules do drop out of the bodyshell - You can CAREFULLY bend the cab apart slightly, and the module ( cab interior, seats and lights ) will be dislodged from the lugs under the doors, which hold it in position...

If it's new, of course, send it back, but I'm gathering from your post it isn't...

Is this issue you explained a variable thing or if the light module doesn't work it doesn't work ?

I did send one back to ROS, but it must be a different issue to the one I experienced as I had one end that didn't work in either direction until I sat the body on correctly, that one nearly went back as well.

Hornby have definately improved the contact strips on the later locos so there must be a second issue as well as the light module issue as you explained steve...
