Re: "What if" Scenario- Steam in the 70s
I think corporate blue would have looked good on the 9Fs, but I don't think it would have gone as far as yellow ends. They were introduced on deisels because they were harder to see and hear coming, which is why steam locos were not so treated even though they got electrification flashes etc. . They...

Re: Hattons Relocating
It's a model which seems to work well in other (related) hobbies. Hannants of Lowestoft will sell you almost anything (non-railway) scale modelling related by mail order from a warehouse. There is a counter for personal callers but they don't pretend to be a local modelshop, their business is import...

Re: RMWeb forum joining???
I have to say that the shite they have been spouting about KR models is beyond ridiculous especially as not one person there has seen any of KR's models in the flesh yet.
Unfortunately the fact that nothing has appeared in the flesh yet may be the problem. They (foru...

The Hormby Princess Elizabeth is indeed OO gauge. You won't go far wrong with Mahoganydog's recommendations.

Re: RMWeb forum joining???
Rmweb are not linked to Bachmann any more than they are any other manufacturer. They are however part of Warner Publishing so they follow whatever Warner's group policy is on not slagging off potential advertising clients.
Their sign up is broken though.

Re: Birdcage question
The Portholes have them as well so they appear to be standard. Future-proofing the tooling presumably.
In theory they should improve running as the pin points are effectively running in a metal bearing rather than plastic.

Re: Push -Pull operations
This was the 1980s, passengers were self-loading freight as far as the Operating Dept was concerned. Clìpping and scotching required a handsignalman unless the signalman was prepared to do it, and even then that was only practicable at the quieter boxes. Turfing them out was usually much quicker. I ...

Re: Push -Pull operations
As was explained to me at signalling school when discussing the many things you were not allowed to do with a passenger train, "It's very easy to turn a passenger train into a non-passenger train, you just need a platform".

Re: Push -Pull operations
Most push-pull services used designed (or converted) for purpose rolling stock with a driving position at one end of the coach and some form of communication between the driver in the coach and the fireman on the footplate doing the work. The driver would have at least a brake valve. There were odd ...

Re: Which Hornby controller
The R965 is bomb proof and I wish it was still available. The R8250 trips out at the slightest provocation but doesn't indicate that it has done so, you just have to wait for the thermal widget to reset itself. As a controller it doesnt even make a good paperweight, its too light. I would fork out t...

Re: Lowmac
Do the loads need to be crates ? The 'mac' part of the name comes from 'machinery', you could have excavators, road rollers, army lorries, anything like that on them.

Agreed, the plastic sheet will take the weight provided the joints will. If it worries you reinforce them with thick strip along the joints inside.

Re: Track Distance From Platforms
Felt tipped pens sellotaped to one end and the centre of your longest coach (Dapol 12 wheeled diner in my case) make a useful marking gauge at the baseboard marking out stage. You get clearance of half a pen width all round. Crossovers within platforms will cause you problems with end throw but they...

Re: Spam cans on branch lines
Is the spamcan available because the train it was working terminated at the junction and there's nothing else for it to do until it works the return back to whereever it came from? Potentially yes, there was nothing like the widespread intensive use of assets you see nowadays, indeed you can't use ...
