Re: Peco platform edging

I'm using code 55, which seems to make the top of my rails 3mm above the baseboard. So a 12.5mm platform height from the baseboard equates to about 4' 6" above the top of the rails, I think? Shouldn't it be about 3 ft?

Peco platform edging

Can anyone please give me the height of the Peco platform edging for N? I understand they are too high if you're not using underlay?

I'm tempted by one myself. Can't decide between the two liveries though...

Re: Foam underlay

Woodland Scenics do a range of colours; I'm using their 'brown' (mainly, with some of their other colours mixed in here and there), which is kind of a sandy colour. 'Buff' is a light sandy colour.

Re: Foam underlay

Using (plain) closed-cell foam underlay like the WS track bed doesn't preclude the use of loose ballasting. In fact it would look rather odd if you didn't ballast it. I don't think WS intend it to look 'real'.

Re: Foam underlay

I've used latex adhesive (sold as carpet glue, cost me about £15 for 5 litres) to stick down Woodland Scenics 'track bed', and then to stick the track to that. Works really well and dries quickly.

Re: WS ballast for OO gauge - fine or medium??

As it happens, since my post, I've started ballasting my N layout, using WS 'fine' and I too am finding it quite hard to work with. But I suspect I am stuck with it as the medium would be much too big for N.

Re: electrfrog points

However, if you're DCC then IMHO you're really wasting your time and money as you really won't get the full benefit of electrofrogs unless you do a small alteration to them which is commonly called 'making the points DCC friendly'. Could you explain what you mean by this? My understanding is that c...

Re: WS ballast for OO gauge - fine or medium??

Graham Plowman's opinion is that the medium is too big for OO: http://www.mrol.com.au/Articles/Scenics/BallastSizes.aspx (site seems to be down at the moment).

Re: N Gauge wishlist for 2011

Dapol now have some of their 2011 releases on their web site. I say "some", because as I understand it, they now have a policy of not announcing some of their releases until they are almost on their way to the shops.

Re: track cutting

I use the Vertical Xuron track cutters on code 55 track, and cut with the handle above the track - i.e. cutting side to side as Dave says, and this always results in a near perfect cut requiring very little cleaning up.

I have an N layout under construction, but I don't really understand what this is about - any chance of a bit more explanation of what is expected from participants?

Re: The purpose of track underlay

Has anyone tried the Woodland Scenics Trackbed? It claims to be better than cork and easier to use. I've used it on the first (middle) level of my layout (this level is basically a double track high speed line around the edges of the room), and while it was a pleasure to use and went down very well...
