Re: Parkside Kits - Add Weight?
I find 8p worth of tuppences is about right, evo-sticked to the floor. Opens are a bit more challenging.

Re: Location based freight stock
If you go to local shows, have a look at the second hand traders' stalls and see what they've got. Hornby, Bachmann, Dapol, and before them Mainline, Lima and Airfix have all done PO wagons over the years. Some as main range releases ("Moy" coal merchants of Colchester and the Devizes Sand...

Re: Trap point, catch point, which?
Trap points stop unauthorised right direction movements, catch points stop unauthorised wrong direction movements. That was the BR operating definition, as far as the engineers were concerned they were all trap points.

Re: Signal box redundant levers
A lot depends on the region and the date the signalling system was upgraded. The first couple of boxes I worked were track circuit block (TCB) on a single line, converted from double track in the late 50s. It was all colour lights and motor points, but worked from the original lever frames. The leve...

Re: Signal box redundant levers
If there are still mechanical points and signals left then it's likely that the frame is still being used to control the main line as well with the levers working colour light signals and motor points. Paint them as you would for semaphore but cut the handles down to half height so you can only get ...

Re: Making coupling rods/valvegear
Another vote for Comet here, I'd use their frames too. If you make your own frames use the comet rods to position the axle holes, they absolutely have to match.

Re: A question on L brackets
Half my layout is held together / up with those. The dimple inside the bend on the Homebase ones seems to make all the difference.
Re: Platforms
Scupltamould is great for uneven surfaces but even decrepit platforms will appear reasonably smooth once scaled down. Assuming you're not working in a scale larger than 'O' (where texture shows up a bit more) card painted grey, with a bit of pepper or talc dropped into the wet paint is as much relie...

As opposed to the £59 wagons from Hattons (FEAs) or £75 coaches (Devon Belle obs car, Hattons price) from Hornby, or £200 single railcar from Rails presumably.

Re: Diesel on the rear are they here to stay?
216,000 staff in rail industry and its supply chain in 2015, figures from ORR's Rail Industry Key Statistics sheets on their website. So a bit more than double your 93,000, and how much of the supply chain does your figure include ? I suspect it's just directly employed staff. From 1994 to 2018 pass...

Re: Engine shed track distances
If you have an end-on photo of the shed in question you can work out the distance by comparing with the track. Remember though if working in OO that the rails should be about 19mm apart, not about 17mm ! If not, ten foot minumum is a reasonable assumption, plus a bit if there are structures between ...

Re: Choosing a brake van
As Bufferstop says, potentially all varieties. For your period and region BR and LMS vans would have been in the majority. BR vans were mostly bauxite (piped or fitted) but there were a few grey (unfitted) ones around towards the beginning of your period. Towards the end of the 60s most will have be...
