Re: Reusable, modular layout base in N-gauge

I had bought some cheap plastic people from China via ebay a while back, taking a bit of a chance as they were something like £5 for 500, so at a penny each I was expecting them to be rubbish, but that might work from a distance as a big crowd. However I was pleasantly surprised by the relative qual...

Re: Reusable, modular layout base in N-gauge

After a bit of practising I took the plunge and painted the front of the station using the previous techniques and also added some detailing (advert and information board) stuck on the side to give some 3D relief. I also added a piece of transparent plastic into the window of the side building, draw...

Re: Reusable, modular layout base in N-gauge

Next to paint the brickwork. I decided to try acrylic paint applied by brush this time. Before committing to the whole bridge, I started on the far side that would be out of sight as a practice in case things didn't go to plan First I painted with two coats of red, then washed in a dilute coat of cr...

Re: Reusable, modular layout base in N-gauge

I managed to get that wind-free day and spray painted the whole bridge in grey primer. It certainly has retained the texture details of the roof and brickwork

Re: Reusable, modular layout base in N-gauge

Thanks both for the advice. My grey building was indeed spray painted with grey primer and that went on very well. The station is quite fiddly to access all of the surfaces, but I'll give it a go with the spray first, then pick out details/surface colours in acrylic after. I just need to wait for so...

Re: Reusable, modular layout base in N-gauge

Testing the bridge with my tallest wagon (loaded car transporter) confirmed it was high enough for all trains to pass underneath P3_44.JPG The hole in the backscene is still visible, so I decided to make a canopy to hide it further P3_45.JPG This was glued on and again tested for height P3_46.JPG I ...

Re: Reusable, modular layout base in N-gauge

The hole in the backscene was quite prominent so I figured a station would be needed to hide it P3_36.JPG I had a bit of spare time, so I set about building that station building to cover the hole. Learning from the shed, I decided to go all-plastic for this one. I sketched out a basic design for an...

Re: Reusable, modular layout base in N-gauge

...now there is an interesting idea! A time-lapse of development from old to new. A good opportunity to build a construction site. I've seen these at exhibitions as they show off building frames, cement mixers, cranes, diggers etc and create real interest, and I'm sure it appeals to the sense of con...

Re: Reusable, modular layout base in N-gauge

So, what is left to finish? Whilst the grey shed nicely hides the opening in the backboard that allows trains to pass through from the siding behind the station, I definitely need something to hide the double track of the station in front. I'm thinking a pedestrian bridge to hide the high opening, w...

Re: Reusable, modular layout base in N-gauge

Finally, some views with trains! I've placed my self-modified tomytec crane with cable and suspended load, which I think looks superb in the flesh :D Unfortunately with the location so far back on the layout and the lighting position, the boom is casting a shadow on the backboard! D'oh! Something to...

Re: Reusable, modular layout base in N-gauge

The back module had a yard built up from cardboard. For this one I decided to try using filler between matchsticks. This view shows the pre-smoothed initial fill. Cardboard is used to make a path to the steps of the back module P3_23.JPG Once smoothed, the filler was painted, this time in the darker...

Re: Reusable, modular layout base in N-gauge

I've now moved on to the narrow infill piece between the back module and the station. The extra loop will be a running line, so it was necessary to cut an opening into the backscene board to allow the trains to pass through. Matchsticks form a kerb that is intended to hide the join between the back ...

Re: Reusable, modular layout base in N-gauge

Thanks for all of the comments - it is reassuring to know I've done a good job in other people's eyes. It does help knowing how to use the camera, though I still don't know why the pictures are uploading so small compared to previous uploads? :? The camera does hide some of the imperfections though....

Re: Galgorm Hall 00 Gauge Loft Layout

Really impressive building! Certainly something for me to aspire to building (though I may struggle as I'm an N-modeller)
