Reusable, modular layout base in N-gauge

Hi all. Having completed my first mini layout, one thing I learned was how much time is taken up with the carpentry for the base, and how low a proportion of time was spent on the fun part of making the actual model. It also struck me how much track could be 'lost' to fiddle yards, so I came up with...

Re: Dapol Semaphores

oops ... I hope that didn't come across as overly negative on Dapol (it did turn into a bit of a rant  )! As you say, it is surprising such a seemingly basic error was made - they usually spot such things and post on their site that sometimes new models are delayed due to detected mistakes. Ho...

Re: Dapol Semaphores

A minor oversight??!! At £22 each they are clearly a purchase aimed at serious modellers, and thus the red instead of yellow will render them unsellable I'd have thought! The purchasing manager needs to have some balls and tell the Chinese manufacturers to sort it out or cancel the order. The photo ...

Re: Poole farish Class 158 shell/China made chassis?

I ought to mention that taking all of the roof away leaves absolutely no sideward strength, hence the need to be especially careful when you cut the second side. Maybe try clamping the side between two pieces of wood (covered in tissue paper to protect the paint) to keep it rigid as you cut, althoug...

Re: Poole farish Class 158 shell/China made chassis?

I've done this on several of my 158s. You do actually need to take a lot out, and trim very close to the sides too. Basically you must leave no more than 11mm on each end, so a hole about 125mm long, and completely full-width (flush to the windows)! I cut along the length with a very sharp scalpel, ...

Re: Modern HGV trailers

No, nothing so sophisticated as vinyls. I found some images on the internet, edited them in PaintShopPro then Powerpoint and printed them on normal copier paper using a colour laser printer we have at work (in my lunch break of course!). Then I simply stuck some double sided tape on the back, cut th...

Re: Modern HGV trailers

Looks good Matt - a lot of work, but certainly very detailed. :) If you want to sell them for £17.50, then you will have to come up with something a little special. Tomytec make some excellent models which sell for significantly less on ebay, at around £10 including the tractor unit: http://www.ebay...

Re: Poole Built Grafar chassis and China Bachmann Farish bodies

Hi John. Why would it be a stupid question? You don't own both and have every reason to suspect there could be a design change between the different models - this is the whole reason for a forum such as this - to ask if there is someone out there who has done what you hope to do, rather than you tak...

Re: royal mail rail depto

If you want to make some road vehicles, Tomytec make some excellent N-gauge lorries that you can use as a base. As mentioned by Hiffano above, simply repaint, and stick some computer printed sides to them (use images from the internet and edit in something like PaintShopPro and/or Powerpoint). I als...

Dapol HST additional coaches review

Well my two new standard class HST coaches for the Dapol HST have arrived (NC213A and B) in First Great Western livery :D The quality is as good as those in the book-set. I am not sure what I was expecting, but I feel the fact that they are sold as 'different' items is a bit of a disappointment. The...
