You're welcome. I hope it works for you too :)

I've just tried it on a short section of shoulder ballast, and the result is promising, though it made the profile slump and spread a little when the glue soaked up into it.

Re: Struggling with ballasting N-gauge layout

My ballast is Woodland Scenics' fine grey. It's maybe a little bit darker after gluing, but nothing to write home about. Anyway, when I was writing this morning about knowing the scenic cement had fully penetrated the ballast because it was seeping out the sides of the track, I thought I'd try it th...

Re: Struggling with ballasting N-gauge layout

I've already tried pouring the ballast into pre-glued trackbed, but I ended up getting sticky ballast all over my fingers and tools when I was levelling it, and getting it dragged everywhere just like with the eye-dropper. But I've had another idea that I'm going to try this afternoon . . . . . . .

Re: Struggling with ballasting N-gauge layout

I should have mentioned, my mix is certainly penetrating the ballast, for it oozes out beneath the ends of the sleepers. Maybe it's not penetrating fast enough though, so I need to thin it down a bit. The glue is definitely set hard when I start scraping off the excess, but I'll leave it another day...

Struggling with ballasting N-gauge layout

I've completed the tracks and power wiring for my new N-gauge layout, and I'm now struggling to apply the ballast neatly. I'm placing the ballast only between the rails at the moment, keeping the haunches until after I've done some hard landscaping. I smooth it out between the sleepers, but when I a...

Re: Lenz 100 out of stock everywhere

Thanks for everything Bigmet. That's perfectly clear now, especially the way the track power is AC but, as you say, not the regular 50Hz sine wave type :) That clarifies for me the difference between the power that the signal amplifier is supplying to the tracks, and the power that the PSU supplies ...

Re: Lenz 100 out of stock everywhere

Thanks Bigmet. My misconception was that the "command station", being the hub of the system, would be mains powered, just like my Gaugemaster analogue system. Am I also wrong about the basic power to the track being AC in a DCC system?

Re: Lenz 100 out of stock everywhere

. . . Every DCC system must have a Command Station and at least one Power Station (a.k.a. Booster). It can only have one Command Station, but may have several Boosters. In addition, the system will need a regulated power supply(s) (transformer(s)). In simple terms, the Command Station is the "...

Re: Lenz 100 out of stock everywhere

I'm glad I asked! I thought the "command station" was the clever electronics box that took the input from one or more controllers, and sent the output to the rails in a form of a signal that the engines' decoders can recognise. I thought that in addition to this signal, you need to supply ...

Re: Lenz 100 out of stock everywhere

Have you seen the new Lenz LZV100 that has just came out ,kernow have it for £189.99,take a look ,,, Now I'm getting confused: What's new about the LZV100 -- it looks just like what I've seen advertised for a long while? and it still needs at least £60-worth of controller before it will do anything...

Re: Lenz 100 out of stock everywhere

Thanks RFS, but this discussion has persuaded me that I don't need to spend that kind of money. I'm not in a rush because I'm still building my layout, and can use my analogue controller to test-run trains over it -- admittedly only one at a time because I'm wiring all tracks to a single common ring...

Oh dear, is this another Betamax? I don't want to get caught out again, so maybe I should look at NEC or Gaugemaster instead :(

Re: DCC-ing a non dcc Bachmann Collect Goods

I converted mine to DCC quite a few years ago. Rather than mess around creating a cavity in the ballast weight, I simply placed the chip beneath the boiler and painted it matt black. It's visible when you look at the loco from the side, but not very intrusive. I've tried to upload an image, but the ...

Re: Lenz 100 out of stock everywhere

Interesting! How/why do the UK sources get away with such mark-ups? Thanks RFS :)
