Re: Hornby 2019 Range Speculation Thread

I'd really like to keep to just one manufacturer, mainly to avoid any troubles with differnt couplings, but this apparent scarcity of Box Vans from Hornby makes it seem rather difficult. Should not be necessary to just stick to Hornby - admittedly their have always been slight differences in tensio...

Re: Dapol OO Gauge GWR Large Prairie & GWR Mogul.

Hornby have of course doubled up vs Dapol. There is an all new Terrier coming from Hornby too

The Dapol Terrier is a commission by Rails/NRM/Locomotion and it could have been any manufacturer

Re: Removing dcc

The one thing to watch using a decoder fitted loco on dc is if an electronic track cleaner is in use as that will destroy the decoder. If removing a decoder to use on loco on dc check their still is interference suppression capacitor still fitted, often they are removed as they can adversely affect ...

Re: New Hornby Ruston - any alternatives?

Bachmann class 04 would take you back to the beginning of the 50s, they are available in plain BR black which would be easy to convert to a non BR style. I know they are old and have a split chassis, but they don't seem to suffer the issues that the bigger split chassis kettles suffered from. Howev...

Re: Voltage divider

Voltage drop per diode is approx 0.7v so to drop 12v to 6v you are going to need to fit 16 to 18 Inside a loco that could still be a challenge and if the motor draws more than 1A when stalled you will need to use 3A rated 1N540x series didoes rather than the smaller 1N400x series. Suggest a better a...

Re: Dapol / Airfix / Mainline - Same Company ?

Blimey Mike you are just the man we need. Now where do I send this sheet of A1 sized paper? :D Just invest in a copy of British Model Trains Catalogue, you do not need a totally up to date one - the 9th edition is latest but not error free in terms of stuff produced since 2012 (or not as the case m...

Re: Dapol / Airfix / Mainline - Same Company ?

Further, following the 1992 acquisition of Wrenn, Dapol sold three versions - ones catalogued with WR1 numbers were totally made up from parts that had been made by Wrenn, WR2 was a Wrenn made body on a Dapol chassis and WR3 a Dapol made body from the HD/Wrenn tooling on a Dapol chassis. WR3 were su...

Re: Dapol / Airfix / Mainline - Same Company ?

To clarify / correct Bufferstops posting the timescale of the Hornby Dublo models is that Mecanno (their owners) were bought by Lines Bros in 1964. The Class 81 and the terminus station which were consumed into the new "merged" Triang- Hornby (ie 99.8% Triang). The remainder of HD toolings...

Re: Dapol / Airfix / Mainline - Same Company ?

Old thread I know but reading the 9th edition of British Model Trains Catalogue the situation with the wagons was far more complex than I had thought. Dealing with the wagons originally produced by Airfix these passed to Mainline in 1981 then Dapol in 1985 with whom the LMS Vent Van remains. In 1996...

Re: Tomix Track System

If the train simply goes round a circle (or oval) etc and never shunts / reverses you could try a short length of chain as a coupling if the need arises.

Re: Tomix Track System

If the 009 is working rather than a diorama you need to be careful as locos and stock may have difficulty getting round ultra sharp curves and even if each item runs round the curve okay there may be issues with them when coupled together.

Re: Tomix Track System

Code 80 - beware of the points, I purchased a 3 way to use on a layout otherwise using Kato. One of two motors built in it keeps on failing to work (have taken it apart numerous times and cannot fathom why as tested it works okay); annoyingly it a major lift of track to release it which means the wh...

Re: Electrotren 0-6-0T 'Black Ajax'

Are all the pick ups correctly aligned? If they are do you have the blanking plug - it would be worth removing the decoder and testing it on dc to see if its the loco or the decoder that is causing the problem.

Re: Decisions made

Having RC'ed a Heljan Bo_Bo chassis for use with a track cleaning train through an inaccessible* tunnel (the RC just in case a track powered loco got stuck while track cleaning) I struggle to envisage adequate space in the Peckett as well so staying dc is probably a good idea. * the inaccessibility ...
