Looks pretty sweet even now. As for the track, the rails actually look fine, you just need to tone down the dark sleepers. On my (real) railway the rust leaches off them and on to the sleepers and ballast. You can tell them all apart, but its different shades and tones of the same (rust) colour rath...

You'll certainly need one for the crossover. The signal will be there to tell the driver whether he's clear to proceed on to that inner branch-line. Sidings work the same way. If its within a yard the shunter may work a ground-frame without anything more complicated than hand-signals to the driver. ...

Really depends on you. There are basically two things signals are used for: one is block working and the other is for junctions. Block working is straightforward: the line is divided into blocks and the signal is used to tell the driver whether the block ahead is clear or not. Junctions are similar....
