Re: Baseboard frame

At some point it may need to be moved. Two small boards joined together is a good idea. Is it an easy task to be able to make sure the fixed track lines up properly again when the boards need to be rejoined?.

Re: Baseboard frame

Thanks Bufferstop. Bearing in mind it is a small layout, I was just going to put in a couple of batons underneath from side to side. My carpentry skills are minimal to say the least!. Would this be strong enough support?.

Baseboard frame

Hi all. Have finally got my ply top for my baseboard. I now want the build the frame separate the pop the ply on top. What timber dimensions would you recommend for the frame?. I was thinking 3 " X 1 or 2" X 1, then using the same for a couple of bracing pieces underneath. Only a small lay...

Re: cork underlay

Thanks for the replies. Think I'll give the cork a miss and save time and money. Just a question to Dad-1, do you find any advantage varnishing the ply rather than say a grey primer?.

cork underlay

Hi everyone. Just in the process of putting together my track layout. Have been watching some vids on you tube about ballasting. A lot of modellers seem to elevate the track on cork strips. Are there any particular advantages to this process apart from elevating the track a little?. Thanks.

Re: Digital sound

Thanks to everyone for their input. Think I may go for a DCC ready loco, maybe a Bachmann or Hornby and buy my own decoder with sound. Are these easy to fit ?.

Re: Digital sound

So, would it be worth buying just a DCC ready loco and then purchasing a decoder from another supplier. Would this be compatible with a hornby product?.

Digital sound

Hi everyone. Can anyone advise on TTS sound locos. If the loco is advertised with TTS sound does this mean it is DCC fitted in the normal manner or is the sound decoder a separate entity than the one which would drive the loco. Sorry to sound thick but some of these terms seem confusing. I have also...

Re: Starting out

That's a good comprehensive summary Mountain thanks. Seems from what you say if I have say a couple of loops of track and sidings etc, I will need two dc controllers(or more) to run a couple of trains with the controllers wired to each track. Would this require a lot of complex wiring?.

Starting out

As a newbie to model railways my initial idea was to look at the Hornby digital range. However, their prices seem way over the top for what you actually get. Looking at Lima and others do they offer much in the digital world and are they of a decent quality?. Many thanks.

Re: Digital layout

Thanks Andy. Are you saying an ordinary loco with no digital capacity can be run by a digital controller?. Bit confused on that one!.

Re: Digital layout

Thank you for your replies. Food for thought. Probably start with the basics then see how it goes.
