Re: How to tell which hornby steam locos have tender pickups

Crikey ! I have opened a can of worms! Excuse my ignorance, I was thinking that having tender electrical pickups would make a loco run better over insulfrog points. I will do some more digging and research to way up the pros and cons ! ps, as a total beginner, my layout will only have insulfrog poin...

Re: hornby 0-6-0 terrier a1x for freight work?

After a quick google I think the new outside frame shunters are like this -

When compared to this cheaper NRM shunter on the left you can clearly see the difference in design -

How to tell which hornby steam locos have tender pickups?

As the above says guys, I would love to find out which currently available or forthcoming hornby locos have tender pick ups. If there are any 'railroad' series locos with tender pickups I will be more than happy !!

Thanks guys and Merry Xmas to all :)

beginners help with point motors needed !

Hi guys, can someone explain or confirm the easiest and simplest way to add point motors to a analogue DC only layout? I like the hornby r8014 and r8015 building that covers it. Do I just need to add a hornby r044 passing contact and power all this from a suitable controller? Are any other component...

Re: 6ft x 4ft double oval layout help please !!

I will not be using my tornado loco on any 1st radius curves. I have other 0-6-0 and 0-4-0 locos for freight pulling on the 1st radius and inner loop. I just need to be able to get my express loco from 3rd radius outer loop to inner loop sidings. Many thanks guys for all your help so far, you guys a...

Re: 6ft x 4ft double oval layout help please !!

Many thanks skyblue, I definately agree with you in adding another set of points in the oppo direction so that I can get my locos from outer to inner oval and back without reversing ! However, will my tornado class loco pulling 2 or 3 coaches be able to navigate over 'normal' hornby r8072/3 points w...

Re: 6ft x 4ft double oval layout help please !!

Hi again guys. I just went up to the spare bedroom and did a mock up. I can run 3rd radius on the outer loop and 2nd radius inner on my baseboard. I will then have some points to get between the inner and outer loops for goods yard/siding for wagons and freight. However............assuming my expres...

Re: 6ft x 4ft double oval layout help please !!

Thanks guys, I incorrectly assumed the layout was 3rd and 2nd radius ! Thanks for all the help so far anyway. I think I will just start my layout with a double oval 3rd and 2nd radius, and then add express points on the outer oval straight to get my tornado and coaches into a station siding. The eng...

Hi guys, I would like to build something like this --- http://www.freetrackplans.com/0103-Double-Oval.php but I need to know what hornby curved points to use for the siding shown in the top left curve. Can anybody please supply the hornby code for the correct points? I will be running a tornado A1 c...

hornby 0-6-0 terrier a1x for freight work?

Hi everyone, I am a total newbie so please go easy !! I am looking for a small-ish steam loco to pull all my freight wagons, and I wondered how the hornby Terrier / A1X compares with the hornby 08 class shunter (which I already own). They are both 0-6-0 configuration, so does that mean that both loc...

Re: New to Model Railways. Best Hornby Locomotives

Just buy what you like and what you can afford. I would say however that the larger the loco and the more drive wheels and pickups, the more control you will have. The 0-4-0 loco's in the cheap sets are ok for beginners and youngsters but they seem very limited to me in terms of slow speed running a...
